Karm 1977

Karm is a 1977 Indian Bollywood social film released on 1977. The film is directed by B. R. Chopra, produced by B. R. Chopra.

This is the story of a Iftikar(Judge Shyamlal) who lives with his wife and only son Arvind(Rajesh Khanna). Arvind is studying law and plans to become a lawyer and then a judge like his father. Arvind meets Asha(Vidya Sinha) studying in the same college and falls in love with her. Both plan to get married. But Asha's father who is a renowned astrologer, predicts that the future is dark if they both get married. So the couple stay together without getting married. Arvind's parents request him to get married to another girl but he goes against his parents and stays with Asha. Asha becomes pregnant and soon they start making plans for the new addition in the family. At this stage,Arvind meets a lovely young girl Neelam(Shabana Azmi), his boss's daughter and they are both drawn to each other. While Neelam doesn't know that Arvind is married, Arvind himself is torn between Asha's father's predictions and his own confusion. Mean while Asha's father passes away and she leaves for her parental home in Darjeeling without informing Arvind. Arvind tries to search for her but in vain.Impulsively, Arvind gets married to Neelam. When she gets to know of this, a devastated Asha takes shelter in Swami's (Om Shiv Puri) aashram. Unable to hide any longer, Arvind informs Neelam of his past life, and she is shocked. Its here when they both meet with an accident. Neelam dies in the accident and Arvind is hospitalised. After a complicated operation, a remorseful Arvind gets married to Asha and they live happily after.

Karm is the story of a conflict between mans actions and his destiny. The love of Asha and Arvind is poised to bring about a marriage between Karm and Superstition but it leads to conflict when the astroleger father Chinthamani predicts the death of Arvind on the eve of the marriage in the event of his marital union with Asha.
