Safar is a 1970 Indian Bollywood romance, musical, family drama, social film released on Jan 01, 1970. The film is directed by Asit Sen, produced by Riyaz.

Neela (Sharmila Tagore) and Avinash (Rajesh Khanna) are medical students.They fall in love with each other. However, Avinash realises that he has blood cancer. He tells Neela that she should live her life and not die with him. Neela goes to teach a young boy called Monto whose elder brother Shekar kapoor (Feroze Khan), instantly falls in love with her. Avinash convinces Neela to marry Shekhar but does not attend their marriage. Neela again resumes college and goes to check on Avinash. When Shekhar comes to know, he starts suspecting that Neela and Avinash are having an affair. He asks Monto to keep an eye on them. Monto tells Neela about this and Neela and Shekar have a fight. Shekhar, who is already depressed, consumes cyanide and dies. Neela is then charged with murder. In the meanwhile, Avinash who knew that Shekhar was unhappy about his relationship with Neela, leaves town. Neela is subsequently put behind bars. Her mother in law, however, supports her and she is relieved from the murder charge. She again resumes college and goes on to become a great doctor after a few years. Monto informs Neela that Avinash is back. Dr Chandra (Ashok Kumar) who had taught both Neela and Avinash, clears Neela’s misunderatanding. Neela goes to meet Avinash, but he dies. Monto blames Neela for Avinash's death. Years later, Monto writes to her that he understands her love and secrifice, and that though he is going abroad he would always be close to her heart. Neela continues her service to mankind.

Avinash and Neela are medical students. They are going steady and hope to marry, but their dreams are shatered when it is revealed that Avinash has terminal cancer. Avinash refuses to marry Neela as he feels that she has no future with a dying man, and he forces her to marry a handsome businessman, Shekar. Shekar proves jealous husband and he cannot digest the fact that his wife once loved Avinash. He neglects his business and starts losing heavily on his investments and finally frustarted, he commits suicide. Neela is charged for his murder but she is finally acquitted. She continues her medical practice to become a famous surgeon. And one day Avinash comes back to her at the end of his life to die in her arms. An accomplished medical student, the beautiful Neela makes the acquaintance of a young painter named Avinash (Rajesh Khanna) under unusual circumtances. She finds that he had painted several portraits of her before having met her ! . Neela and Avinash become friendly, and Neelas family too, grow quite fond of the young artist. . In due course, Neela faces an economic problem : she is unable to meet her college expenses. Being a brilliant student and favourite of Dr. Chandra (Ashok Kumar), the dean of the medical college, it is arranged for her to earn some money by giving tuitions. . Dr. Chandra fixes up Neela to teach Montu ( Mahesh Kumar), the kid brother of a wealthy stockbroker names Shekar (Feroz Khan). The moment he sets eyes on her, Shekhar falls in love with Neela. . Then Shekhar calls on two people-one is Neelas brother, a comicplaywright named Kalidas (I.S.Johar), and the other is Dr.Chandra He expresses his desire to marry Neela. Both the men mention Avinashs name to Shekhar. . And it is now that life starts playing queer tricks with these people. Why should Avinash, who loves Neela deeply, persuade Neela to marry Shekhar? Why should Dr. Chandra, who alone knows Avinashs secret, keep quit and not speakout? Why should Neela marry Shekhar ? . But marry him she does, and as life goes on piling one misfortune after another on her, Neela finds her husband peniless and dead one day- and she is confronted with the charge of murdering him. . There is only one ray of sunshine in Neelas life-her ambition to become a brilliant surgeon. This she does become. She dedicates her life to her work, to the sick, to the dying, to the suffering. . And the, Avinash returns to his old home again, to the same old place where they used to be together, and once again Neela is faced with a perplexing decision.
