He was born on 13 October 1911. He was born as Kumudlal Ganguly. He is an Indian film actor known for his iconic status in the Indian cinema. He is the recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke Award and Padma Bhushan the same year in 1998 for his contributions to Indian cinema. He was born in Bhagalpur. He was born in Brahmin Bengali family. His father, Kunjlal Ganguly was a lawyer and his mother Gouri Devi was a housewife. His brother was Kishore Kumar who was a famous singer. He was married at a young age to Shobha in an arrange marriage. He completed his education from Presidency College of the University of Calcutta, Kolkata and became a lawyer. He made his acting debut from the film Bombay talkies. He had worked in the movies such as Bandhan (1940), Janmabhoomi (1936), Kangan (1939), Azad (1940), Savitri (1937), Izzat (1937) and 'Nirmala' (1938). He anchored the first Indian soap opera Hum Log.
