He was born on 25 February 1948. He is an Indian actor. He did many Nepali, Telugu and Tamil films as well. He is of Sikkimese-Bhutia descent. He did many Hindi movies. He is also a part of many International projects too. His famous International project was Seven Years in Tibet where he acted alongside Hollywood actor Brad Pitt. He was given the Padma Shri Award. He is known for doing villainous characters. He was born to Buddhist family. He attended Birla Vidya Mandir and St. Joseph's College, Nainital, in 1964. He had an interest in joining the Indian army. He also won the award for the best cadet from West Bengal. He also participated in the Indian parade. But, as he had to do acting workshop from Film and television, Pune so he quit the option of joining Indian army. He is married to Gawa Denzongpa, she is a princess. He did movies like: Sanam Bewafa,Khuda Gawah, Lahoo Ke Do Rang, Andar Baahar (1984) , Aandhi Toofan (1986), Bhagwan Dada (1986) , Agneepath (1990) , Hum (1991) , Ghatak: Lethal , Krantiveer (1994) and Pukar (2000).
