She was an active personality of the Hindi and Marathi cinema, as well as theatre. She did 200 films and worked with numerous theatre productions. She was known for her work as Jodha Bai. Her movies include: Mughal-e-Azam (1960), Bharat Milap (1942), Charnon Ki Dasi (1941), Mirza Ghalib, Bobby (1973) and Bidaai (1974). She was born in Maharashtra. She completed her education from Cathedral High School and St. Xavier’s College where she studied B.A. She was married in Khote family and had two sons: Bakul and Harin. She debuted with a minor role: Farebi Jaal. She was then offered ’Ayodhyecha Raja’. She stole hearts with her stunning performances in Acharya Atre's Payachi dasi(Marathi) and Charnon Ki Dasi (Hindi) (1941) and Vijay Bhatt's classic, Bharat Milap (1942).
