She was born on 13 August 1933. She is an Indian actress, active in radio, theatre, television and active personality in the film industry. She has written many cookbooks and she is also the television chef. She was born in Delhi. Then after this, she completed her education from Miranda House (of the University of Delhi). She also completed her education from Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), from which she graduated with honours in 1957. She married to Saeed Jaffrey. But, later she got separated. She has three daughters: Mira, Zia and Sakina. She then got married to Sanford Allen, a violinist with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. She was seen in many movies like: Shakespeare Wallah (1965), The Guru (1969), Autobiography of a Princess (1976), Heat and Dust (1983), The Perfect Murder (1988), Cotton Mary (1999) and many others. She has done many theatres like: A Tenth of an Inch Makes the Difference by Rolf Forsberg, The Guide, Conduct Unbecoming, Two Rooms by Lee Blessing, Last Dance at Dum Dum by Ayub Khan-Din, Bombay Dreams on Broadway and India Awakening by Anne Marie Cummings.
