He was born on 10th May, 1905 and he died on 19th February, 1978. He recorded his first song at the age of 18.Rabindranath was very impressed by his singing and therefore, he gave him the chance to set tunes for his poems. He received his training from Sri Durgadas Bandopadhyay for classical & light classical music and by Sri Dinendranath Tagore (Rabindranath Tagore’s grand nephew) for Rabindrasangeet. He was the recipient of National Award for Best Music Direction in movies on quite a few occasions, the BFJA award for his work as music director and also the Life Time Achievement Awards from AIR and HMV (now Saregama). He ruled the music industry for more than 50 years. He sang with many well known personalities like like: K L Saigal, S D Burman, Hemant Kumar, Kanan Devi, Geeta Dutt and Asha Bhosle. He was appointed as the Honorary Advisor to the Folk Entertainment Section of the Government of West Bengal, from 1953 to 1968, by the Chief Minister of West Bengal. He also sang some non-filmy songs in: in Hindi, Urdu and Bengali to his credit. He also got the Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contribution in the Indian cinema.
