He did plays such as Kallol (1965), Louha Manob (1964), Manusher Adhikar, Maha-Bidroha and Tiner Toloar. He is the recipient of three Filmfare Best Comedian Awards and National Film Award for Best Actor in 1970. He is given the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship for lifetime contribution to theatre. He was born to Girijaranjan Dutta. He attended St. Edmund's School, Shillong. He completed his Matriculation in 1945 from St. Xavier's Collegiate School, Kolkata.
