This is India's highest award in cinema. This award has been presented annually the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals, an organisation set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The award was first presented in 1969. The award was first introduced by the Government of India to commemorate Dadasaheb Phalke's contribution to Indian cinema. This award has been given under the name of Dadasaheb Phalke, the father of Indian cinema. The actress Devika Rani was the first who was given the first ‘Dadasaheb Phalke award’.
