In a late scene from the film, 2 of the 3 idiots zip down their pants and pat their bottoms facing the third idiot. Rather than feeling gross at that instant, you have a lump in throat. For the zillionth time in a Hindi film, a bride runs away from the pheras on her wedding day. But the scene still doesn’t come across as clichéd. For a group of all-male engineering students, to ‘deliver’ means to literally carry out a delivery operation on a woman in labour pain.

Life is all about listening to your heart and chasing your dreams. That's the essence of 3 IDIOTS, directed by the supremely talented Rajkumar Hirani. Let me come to the point right away. There are films and there are more films. And then there's 3 IDIOTS. Come to think of it, 3 IDIOTS carries a huge 'burden' on its shoulders: The 'burden' of humungous expectations. And it's not without reasons...3 IDIOTS is Aamir's next release after the record-breaker GHAJINI.

Bring out the bugles for the biggest celluloid celebration in a long, long time. God bless Rajkumar Hirani for ending an otherwise mediocre Bollywood year on a smashing note. You go in to see 3 Idiots expecting the genius combination of Hirani and Aamir Khan to weave magic on screen. But despite the mental conditioning, the impact of the film is so overwhelming that it leaves you spellbound for hours after it has ended.

Rajkumar Hirani is the best filmmaker Hindi cinema has produced in a long, long time. It's not that there aren't other mavericks, geniuses, and talented storytellers who give us some fabulous movies from time to time. But Hirani has, one film after the other, proved his mettle as a writer/director who does not believe in giving you entertainment the easy way -- he ensures that you take back home a few lessons about life, too. Three Idiots has one of the most relevant issues of Indian society at its core, a heartwarming story woven around it and a narrative that takes you through the film effortlessly, leaving you happy, moved, and thoughtful in the end.

“You cannot stop an idea whose time has come”. The time for young India to think for themselves has come. And this movie is not challenging the system of education, it is saying if you’ve ever had a dream and a passion, follow it because your instincts teach you more than any text book can- don’t be a machine, be an idiot. Being an idiot, I’m giving this 4 stars because I think this is much bigger than just a film, it’s a cultural phenomenon. Just like the Velvet Revolution affected change in Czech Republic with rock music, maybe this movie will affect societal change about how we learn. Yet one of the film’s arguments is that rankings don’t matter; only what you think does. So you must go see it. Whether you like or dislike it, whether it bores you or elates you, as long as you’ve thought for yourselves, and allowed the idiot in you to awake for a bit, I think the creators are happy. All is indeed, well.

It has to be the most idiotic start to such a fascinating movie. You wonder where the movie is heading to when an aircraft returns to base after a passenger suffers a heart attack in the feeblest performance ever. But Rajkumar Hirani soon gets his act and cast together to deliver a stunning product. Education is not about success; it's about pursuing excellence and doing what you are passionate about. In the end, success will chase you. This oft-repeated dialogue is beautifully portrayed in the last frame. I have never laughed so hard before leaving a theatre. Hirani actually manages to show success chasing you. Hilarious. Bhaiyya, All is well!

The director admits, 3 Idiots is at best 5 per cent of Chetan Bhagat’s pulp-read 5 Point Someone. Thankfully. This is a film that never undermines ‘Bollywood’ for its authenticity: it has its alternating emotional highs and lows, a catch-point (‘aal ij well’ for ‘jaadu ki jhappi’), an invincible hero, and perfect knowledge of when to break into chiffon, song, or the interval. That smart art-form with its own suspensions of disbelief is getting scarcer by generational loss. Before 3 Idiots on screen, you still don’t feel like the fourth idiot in the theatre. That’s a non-Bollywood relief. This is the sort of movie you’ll take home with a smile and a song on your lips, unless the hype has entirely messed up with your expectations.

As Raju Hirani says, this film is about five per cent of Chetan Bhagat's bestseller Five Point Someone. This is in fact a hardcore Bollywood flick, which demands its own share of subjectivity while you watch many parts of the story fit very conveniently into the larger scheme. The filmmakers know just when to throw in that emotional low, after a comical high. They know when the song is most appropriate. And when melodrama will do just fine. Very few contemporary Bollywood directors understand this now. The fact that you don't feel like the fourth idiot watching 3 Idiots is, for its genre, the greatest relief. This is in every way Munnabhai - part 3. I think you shouldn't miss it at all.

Going home after watching 3 Idiots I felt like I'd just been to my favorite restaurant only to be a tad under-whelmed by their signature dish. It was a satisfying meal, don't get me wrong, but not the best meal I'd been expecting. 3 Idiots, starring Aamir Khan, produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, and written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani, is a film of impeccable pedigree. It's a breezy entertainer and it's got its heart in the right place, but it appears to be lacking in the naiive idealism

All is not well with Rajkumar Hirani’s third film. It’s called 3 Idiots but after you have given three hours of your life to it, how you wish he could have just finished the trilogy with this one and made it “Munnabhai B.E.” The B.E. stands for Bachelor of Engineering. After making a mamu out of the MBBS-producing system, Hirani wanted to go after the system churning out lawyers of the country. “Munnabhai LLB” did happen but it was beautifully disguised as Gandhigiri. And now under the garb of Chetan Bhagat’s IIT bestseller Five Point Someone, Hirani has hit out at the country’s obsession with an engineering degree.

If anyone else had made ‘3 Idiots’, there would have been an immediate outpouring of hosannahs, because the ability to wrap an engaging story around an important message is a forgotten skill in most Hindi cinema. But this is from Rajkumar Hirani who brought back joy and sparkle to the movies. Both his ‘Munnabhai’ films are superb entertainers that you can watch any and all the time: I would, if I could, put both on a continuous loop, and swoop in

In Rajkumar Hirani's latest film, a character steps to a blackboard and chalks up, for the benefit of a befuddled engineering college classroomful of students, the word 'Farhanitrate,' daring them to tell him what it means. The word is a pun on the character's best friend, Farhan, and while it may be a non-existant gag word in the film, the compound seems to exist in real life -- Hirani's film is doused liberally with Farhanitrate

My review of 3 Idiots (2009) by rajverma67

This is the story of college life. The story starts with Farah Kureshi narrating his story about his college days. He has missed his flight to meet his friend Ranchoo. He goes with Raju and Silencer to visit Rancho in Shimla. Raju has missed his pant and he has just waked from his sleep. Farah takes these two to find his missing friend. The story starts on the day when Farah and Raju are admitted in the engineering college in Delhi. Farah has an interest in photography whereas Raju’s family condition is very weak. The day they are admitted in the college, they face raging by their seniors. So, the film shows the entry of Ranchoo and he solves the raging problems with his technical skills. Rancho is a very sharp-minded person and is genius in his academics. Soon, Farah and Raju share a friendship bond with Ranchoo and they always love him more. But one day, in their lives enter Virus, their Principal who tries every possible thing to destroy Ranchoo’s main motive. Infact he writes letters to Farah’s and Raju’s families, but Ranchoo makes his friends realize that excellence is the best. In Ranchoo’s life enters Pia who is a doctor. Even though, Pia is engaged but still Ranchoo is in love with Pia. Pia is Virus’s daughter who after realizing a soft corner for Ranchoo decides to help him and his friends in whatever situations they are put in. Rancho is a genuine guy who tops his exams and also helps his friends in every situations. One day, when Virus sees Ranchoo stealing the exam papers, he decides to suspend his friends and Ranchoo. But it is because of Ranchoo that Pia’s elder sister delivers a boy. Virus is happy to know this and in the end he gives him a very precious gift, his pen. After the college ends, his friends have not received any information about Ranchoo and therefore, they decide to find him. Then after this they visit Shimla, they come to know that Ranchoo is not the one whom they have meet in their college, he is a different person. So, they try every possible thing to extract the real identity of Ranchoo and in the end they come to know that Ranchoo completed his degree course for the other guy. He lives in Laddak. He is working for the betterment of small children. His friends along with Pia go to meet him and finally, they come to know that he is India’s top scientist, Funsuk Vangdu for whom Silencer was searching. This is one of the superhit films in the India. The film created an effective disaster on kids, teenagers and also for the parents. The film gives a very practical approach. What’s the specialist of the film is the speech, which Silencer delivers. It is just an icing on the cake. No doubt, Amir is the ultimate hero of the film. But his friends including, Madhavan and Sharman too have shaped perfectly in the shoes of teenagers.
