Considering all that it has going for itself - Vishal Bhardwaj's masterful handling of the mise-en-scene; dark, alluring images that stay with you; and the lovely Priyanka Chopra in a majestic role - you have to dig deep to answer why 7 Khoon Maaf doesn't quite leave you with that sense of satisfaction of watching a film that stays memorable. ‘Saat Khoon Maaf’ succeeds in engaging you at every point. Given a choice, darrrlings, I will take a Vishal Bhardwaj film with all its flaws everytime, because it is a cinematic experience in the true sense of the word : this film gives us a story, characters, and an urge to ask that age-old question– and then what happened?

On the whole, 7 KHOON MAAF is a dark film that has its share of positives and negatives. However, the film will meet with diverse reactions – some will fancy it, while some will abhor it. The film will appeal more to the critics/columnists and the festival circuit. However, it is not the kind of cinema that will set the box-office ablaze. Ideally, I would’ve given a two star rating for this film, but I am going ahead with an extra star for Priyanka Chopra’s sterling performance!

This tale of myriad murders begins in Pondicherry where Sussanna (Chopra) resides and owns a ranch of sorts. She is the kind of femme fatale you definitely do not wanna mess with. She's confident, beautiful and knows it, and knows how to get her way. But her taste and judgment in men is quite flawed. She begins her killing spree with the pehla pati, her dad's choice, Major Rodrigues (Neil). The guy a cruel cad gets exceedingly frustrated

This unfortunately, is a disappointing giving from the Vishal Bhardwaj house. For the most part 7 Khoon Maaf fails to live up to the otherwise exquisite and honestly different genre of films that Vishal always tends to throw our way. For a director who has promised to be different, this is awfully lackluster and disengaging. You can’t help but question if, in fact, Bhardwaj has lost the spark he once possessed because this film cannot ask for maafi from us.
