Miracles are possible. You wait ages for an outstanding debut film, then two turn up in the same week. Intriguingly still, 9, like District 9 - yes, both movies also share the same numeral - is an expanded version of an earlier short, in this case Shane Acker’s award-winning 2005 animated fable. The plot of the spectacularly envisioned sci-fi adventure revolves around the titular rag doll who’s exploring the post-apocalyptic landscape for signs of life

The post-Apocalyptic world is a bleak, dark place filled with industrial wreckage. Against this backdrop, director Shane Acker crafts a multi-layered tale that can be enjoyed as much by pre-teens as their papas. 9 is unrelenting in its visual grimness: the silent factories with giant wheels, the huge eerie black towers, the metal garbage strewn across the landscape - all combine to create a savage setting. There is a peculiar poetry to be found in the sound of metal as it scrapes, tinnily or with a steel resolve, against other material. There's the clang of clumsiness, the squeak of subterfuge, and even, as Marvel devotees are well aware, the snikt of impending asskickery. And it is in this world, the world of metal meeting wood and jute strung together with brass zippers, that director Shane Acker is at his best: working at the details and keeping it real.

9 seems like Tim Burton's adaptation of Terminators. Opening in a post-apocalyptic scenario, the film is a story of 9 ragged dolls fighting for their lives against an oppressive machine that threatens to suck their souls. While the human race is destroyed, its now up to these dolls to wage a war against the machines and ensure stability and peace on earth. Leading this mission is 9 (Elijah Wood) who along with a warrior doll 7 (Jennifer Connelly) and others

Animation film 9, directed by Shane Acker, is a bleak apocalyptic tale in which a ragtag group of doll-like creatures appear to be the only survivors on a ruined landscape that's obliterated of humans. These creatures have survived a horrible devastation in which the world's technology and machinery attacked mankind. Our heroes, who come with numbers instead of names, are hiding in fear of being next in line.
