There's Pari, the spoilt rich glamgirl, Rakhi, the spunky and spitfire Punjabi kudi, Jiya who's sweet and subdued, and Sanya, attractive and confident. Despite their different personalities and class differences - Jiya comes from the middle-class - the four girls are 'friends forever'. Discussing push-up bras, smoking during a school trip, breaking a car's windscreen - they do everything together. But all relationships have those narrow crevices where negative energy thrives.

Recall those years when you were growing up. When you were in your teens. When you just stepped out of school. When you were learning to take independent decisions. When you were waiting to explore a whole new world... The images may be blur, but the flashes from the past should bring a smile on your face. Writer-director Rupali Guha tries to capture those years on celluloid in AAMRAS. The concept is interesting, but the writing appeals in bits and spurts.

Aamras is a formulaic coming-of-age tale of four school friends about to graduate. Each comes from a different background -- Jiya (Vega, sincere) is a middle-class Maharashtrian who lives with her mother; Pari (Ntasha, over the top) is the spoilt, rich kid; Rakhi (Maanvi, endearing) is the honest and real Punjabi kudi; Sanya (Aanchal) is the Parsi girl who contributes little besides the bimbo element.

Back in the day, there used to be a Bollywood sub-genre that concerned a group of girls, out on a campus vacation together. One of the short-skirts would either be out to hook up with the teacher accompanying the class, a boy from another school, the local guide, or the guest-house caretaker. Bindu could play that short-skirt. She’s played the warden in her later years too. For whatever it’s worth, Reema Lagoo is poor replacement for Bindu.

Aamras is a sweetly titled film with an interesting premise, namely the sweet taste of friendship, which doesn’t quite go anywhere. A teenage movie, Aamras stars four new girls and is directed by debutante Rupali Guha. Pari, Sanya, Rakhi and Jia are four best friends who study in the fancy Mumbai International High School. They do what best friends across time and Archie comics have done before - bunk classes, get naughty, fight and make up
