To recreate the bygone era and tell a parable of the former period is nothing short of a challenge and that's exactly what director Vipul Shah is out to achieve with his latest outing ACTION REPLAYY. Travel machines and time travel stories are no longer alien for Bollywood. We have had our share of movies wherein characters have either travelled into the future or into the past. In ACTION REPLAYY, one of the protagonists travels into the pastRead full review3.0

"Aawaz neeche!" orders our preening, young Kishen/Kitchen Kumar (Kumar), a sign of his changing personality thanks to his young son Bunty (Roy Kapoor). Bunty is Kishen’s date guru, reaching out to his father even while he pursues mother Mala (Rai Bachchan). Sounds like Greek to you? Yes, that’s the story of this mad family. Kishen and Mala are the perfect not-made-for-each-other couple. Kumar is a simpleton, non-classy and clumsy, while Mala is the stone-hearted divaRead full review2.5

Retro is chic in Bollywood right now. And director Vipul Shah seems to have got his research right on the glorious 1970s, when go-go girls romanced bell-bottomed guys with the twist, the shake and the tube-burst of colours. Stylistically, Action Replayy is a fun watch and sets the 70s generation on a nostalgia binge, even as it opens up an exotic window to a vibrant new world for a whole new generation of new millennium kids. The long-haired Akshay and the pig-tailed AishwaryaRead full review2.5

To recreate a bygone era is never an easy task for even the most accomplished directors. Vipul Shah takes up the challenge with Action Replayy as he tries to bring back the magic of the swinging '70s in a tale laced with humour and romance. He gets the setting right to an extent but you keep hoping the film offers more than that. The film begins in the present day with the young Bunty (Kapur) trying to bring peace between his squabbling parents, Kishen (Kumar) and Mala (Rai Bachchan).Read full review2.0

First half of Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om, a lovably nostalgic take on ‘70s Bollywood, I suspect, also inspired the first chapter of several films planned after that movie’s release. Om Shanti Om was part-cinema, part-spoof, enjoyed by all, and the Diwali blockbuster of 2007. Two to three years is roughly how long it should take for an inspiration to be green-lit and turned into full-on, big-budget film. Hence, Action Replay (this one), Golmaal 3Read full review2.0

Alittle over a year back Vipul Shah went to court accusing a Tollywood production company of copying his film Namastey London. He spoke about the need for copyright protection, the importance of originality and setting an example. Incredibly, Mr Upright Shah was then well into the making of Action Replayy. He knew he was making a film about a young boy travelling back in time to help his parents fall in love. And while we have had many plots similarRead full review2.0

Vipul Shah's Action Replay is apparently based on a Gujarati film of the same name. I don't know if that Gujarati play had anything to do with Back To The Future. This movie certainly does. It concerns a young boy who travels back in time, on a time machine, to save his parent's marriage. His dad and mom hate each other's guts. He thinks if he can hooks them up better, they might become a better couple later as well.Read full review2.0

Only if it was possible to recreate the magic of a superhit film easily. But it is certainly not Bollywood's style to understand a fact as simple as that. So here we are at our plagiarising best ripping off a superhit time travel comedy that was released twenty five years ago. Robert Zemeckis' gorgeous film, Back To The Future, will find it difficult to even identify with this really distant cousin that is dancing as hard as it can to emulate it and entertain usRead full review1.5

In director Vipul Shah’s Action Replayy a 20-something fellow uses a time machine to travel back into the past, so he can make his parents fall in love, in order to save their marriage in the future. Before you can say Marty McFly - or settle into your seat even - the opening credits of Action Replayy claim the film is based on a Gujarati play, thereby absolving the makers of charges that they’ve plagiarized the cult time-travel comedy Back To The Future.Read full review1.5

Commitment phobic Bunty has got so because he’s seen his mother and father fight like cats and dogs all his life. On his parents’ rancorous 35th wedding anniversary, he decides to go back into the past and see if he can change things around. Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s time machine is an old, old ploy : every two-bit sci fi picture has one. But should a high-end machine look quite such a hick school-boy fantasy?Read full review1.0

It's been 25 years since Christopher Lloyd and Michael J Fox took that DeLorean car and blazed an imagination-burning trail through our consciousness with Robert Zemeckis' magnificent Back To The Future, a time-travel comedy with immense heart. (And one that was just released on DVD with a 25th Anniversary Trilogy box set, in case you're interested. And you should be.) It is no small feat, then, to do what Vipul Shah has with Action Replayy.Read full review1.0

President Obama is on his way in to say hello, so the markets are shutting down while beggars and dustbins are being removed for security reasons, and now this week’s retro release just made Diwali worse. Action Replayy is a boring, stretched, tedious drag of a film, a bit surprising since it is helmed by a hit director and big stars. The story is pure Back to the Future, the Indianised screenplay gets juvenile and repetitive, while the scenes are terribleRead full reviewNR
