Adi Shankaracharya 1986

Adi Shankaracharya is a 1986 Indian Bollywood film released on 1986. In the eighth century, the Hindu thought and philosophy, based on the Vedas and Upanishads, have developed obscurties and inconsistence and they face challenge from heterodox sects and Buddhism. Meaningless rituals and blind, unquestioning acceptance of received knowledge are part of the impurities affectioning Brahminism. Shankaracharya, born in Kerala, arrives on the religious scene around this time. Later to become a towering imterpreter of the Vedic tradition, as a boy he is instructed in the religious life by his father and practises the prevalent rituals. His fathers death compels him to think deep about life and death, about body and atman (soul). With his mothers approval, Shankara decides to lead a life of austerity, dons the robes of a sanyasin, and sets out on a journey in quest of Truth. A journey divided into many phases, which climaxes in Shankaracharya travelling extensively through the sub-continent, drawing people into subtle dialogue and illuminating discourse, furthering the Vedantic school and propagating the Advaita (Monism) philosophy and eventually establishing the four famous mathas (learning centres) in the far corners of India.
