Alibaba is a 1940 Indian Bollywood fantasy film released on 1940. The film is directed by Mehboob Khan.
ONE of the finest fantasied of The Aranian Nights, the story of Ali- Baba who out witted the king of robbers, has cime to be read and enjoyed in almost every part of the world. Our story opens with Cassums wife making a display of her richess and wealth in one of her luxurious appartments. Ali Baba is a poor chap, and his wife was not used to any riches. He lives practically on the generosity of his brother Cassum, and by outting wood in the jungle. Ali Baba his a young son, and Marjina is a slave girl at cassums. . Though poor, Ali Baba has high spirits, and sings in his kitchen while outting wood . Cassum onter, and is angry at sccing his brother happy though in poverty, and accuses him of mis-using his oharity. It was Ali Babas daily duty to go to the jungle and out wood. One day he sets out on his usual errand, but gets, his lifes surprise. . There is a slave girl by name Zabba in Cassums house, and she spys on them to help a gang of robbers. Zabba learns that a rich merohant is to come to Cassums house as his guest with his caravan of riches, and sends this message to the gang of robbers by the ounning method of sending a letter tied to a trained pegeon. . The robbers in the forest are having a little fun by playing dice,and the leader Abu hassan tries to cheat his fellow-men in the game. One of the men catches him in the act of oheating, and Abu Hassan admires his intelligence and appoints hin his chief lieutenant. The message from the spy-girl Zabba reaches the robbers, and Abu Hassan gives instructions to his men to way-lay the merchant and to rob him of his rich caravan. . In the jungle Ali Baba discovers by accident the strong-hold of the robbers magic words they have hidden all their treasure. He hears the robbers magic words, `open sesame, and `Shut sesame, and by repeating these Ali Baba enters the cave of treasures, and fills his bag with money to his hearts content. On returning home, he finds a money lender harassing his wife for the money they owed him, and he throws gold coins at the monery lender to the utter surprise of his wife. He wants to know the exact worth of the coins he has brought, and suggests to his wife to borrow a scale from Cassums house to weigh them. The spy girl Zabba tells Cassums wife that Ali Babas wife has come to borrow the scale, and to find out what they weigh with it, Cassums wife whispers some thing in the ears of Zabba. When the sale is returned, Cassums wife knows that gold coins were weighed in it. . Ali Babas son loves Marjina the slave girl, and carries on a robbers kill, the merchant and all his men, and take the entire booty ot their cave. Abu Hassan, the leader of the gang comes to Cassums house disguised as the merchant, and Cassum receives him with all hospitality. While Ccassum is thus entertaining the `merchant, Ali Baba also arrives with his wife, with great pomp and pegeantry. Cassum is stunned at his borther gets the secret out of him after a long treatment of dirink, dance and music. Marjina overhears the "merchant" (Abu Hassan), and the spy girl Zabba talking about their victory. Out of her love for Ali Babas son she discloses everything to Ali Babas son. During the talk the robber promises to buy up Zabba from Cassum. At the slave market, just when the bids are highest, Ali Babas son brings police, and tells them that Abu Hassan is the leader of the robber gang, and not a merchant. In the fight that ensues however, Abu Hassan, the slave girl Zabba, and his men escape. Cassum arrives at the cave of treasures, and his greed for riches detains him there beyond dusk. He is discovered by the robbers, and killed. Abu Hassan accuses Zabba, the slave girl thinking that she had disclosed their secret ot Cassum. Her pleadings are of no avail, and Abu Hassan puts her into the torture chamber where several others were put before her . Ali Babas son and Marjina are seen together making love to each other He promises to marry her, inspite of her being a slave girl. Ali Baba learns that Ccassum has not returned. He starts our with his son to search for his brother. Thery reach the cave, and with the magic words the door is opened, and they discover Cassums body hung at the doorway. They remove the body from there to give him a decent burial, and take away some riches also. They engage a cobbler to stitch up the body to conceal the marks of violence. The cobbler is bling-folded and taken to Cassums house so that he may not reveal this to anybody. . The robbers return, and find out that the body of Cassum is removed. The leader sends out his men one by one at pain of death to find out who had done it. None succeeds, the leader himself undertakes the task and eventuallly succeeds in finding out that Ali Baba was responsible for all his troubles. He makes a pretence to enter Ali Babas house who is now the richest in the City, and arrives whth all his men, disguised as a great merchant. . There is dinner, dance, music and gala entertainment at the house of Ali Baba.... How Marjina succeeds in out-witting the wittiest of robbers and how the slave girl Zabba escapes from the Dungeon, and how Ali Baba gets all the riches, and how in the end, Marjina and Ali Baba son are wedded, is better seen on the screen, than described......
