Story
An aged doctor narrates the story of a prostitute called Roshanbai. Roshanbai used to entertain visitors to the brothel with 'mujra' every night. As the doctor recollects the memory of Roshanbai, her son comes to meet him. Roshan’s son has become a doctor and a good human being. The doctor gives him Roshan’s jewellery box which he had preserved. Roshan’s son does not accept it. The picture of Roshan in the jewellery box reminds him of the day when he first visited Roshan’s brothel. There he had cured an ailing child whose mother was Sharoma Banerjee. One night when the doctor had come to attend a dinner invitation at her place, he had discovered that the child’s real mother was a prostitute Roshanbai. When the doctor asked her about her past, Roshanbai narrated her story to the doctor. In the past, Roshanbai used to visit the bathing ghat every morning where she could hear the prayers of a brahmin. Roshan liked him and decided to leave her profession with the wish of a new life with the brahmin. She showered Sohanlal, the agent with money so that he would free her from the profession. One day Roshan pretending to be a destitute brahmin girl won the brahmin’s attention and he gave her shelter. She was content with her new life at the brahmin’s place. Roshan in the new name of Sharoma stayed there and also learnt the doctrines from the brahmin. One day the brahmin proposed marriage to Sharoma. Sharoma was in trouble as the brahmin wanted to marry her in the presence of her uncle whose name was mentioned by Sharoma earlier. Sharoma in order to marry the brahmin took Sohanlal’s help to get her a man who would pretend to be her uncle. Sohanlal arranged such a man for Sharoma in return of a lump sum of money. After marriage, Sharoma lived happily with the brahmin though they were extremely poor. One day Sohanlal reached Sharoma’s home and blackmailed her saying he would disclose her past to the brahmin if he was not given more money. He turned a deaf ear to Sharoma’s pleas and disclosed to the brahmin Sharoma's alias Roshan’s past. The brahmin was shocked at Sharoma’s deed of treacherously marrying him and left her forever. Sohanlal was successful in his wicked endeavour to take back Roshan for the prostitution business. Roshan tried to commit suicide but stopped herself as she was pregnant and wanted to bring up her child fighting all her adversities. She wanted to pay tribute to the brahmin’s preachings by sacrificing her life for her son. She earned money by continuing her profession to bring up her child. She also hired a brahmin widow to look after her son with the identity of her son’s mother. Roshan kept her child at her place for a few days within which the child fell ill. She summoned the doctors to cure her child. The doctor valued Roshan’s emotions. He agreed to look after her child’s upbringing. He assured her that her child would grow up into a respectable man. After Roshan’s death, the doctor met Roshan’s son and saw her dream come true as her son had grown up to be a prestigious doctor and a good human being.
