PUSHPA (SHARMILA TAGORE) IS THROWN OUT BY HER HUSBAND RAM RATAN (MAN MOHAN) WHO HAS HAD A SECOND MARRIAGE AS PUSHPA IS INCAPABLE OF BEARING CHILDREN. NO ONE IN HER VILLAGE HELPS HER AND EVEN HER MOTHER THINKS PUSHPA IS IN THE WRONG. NEPAL BABU (MADAN PURI) TAKES HER TO KOLKATA AND PUTS HER IN A BROTHEL. THERE SHE MEETS ANAND BABU (RAJESH KHANNA) WHO FALLS IN LOVE WITH HER. HIS OWN WIFE IS A PARTY ANIMAL AND HAS NO TIME FOR ANAND. HE FINDS SOLACE IN PUSHPA'S COMPANY. ONCE, A LITTLE BOY NANDU, THE SON OF PUSHPA'S VILLAGE NEIGHBOUR COMES TO HER ROOM. THEY BOND INSTANTLY. NANDU'S STEP-MOTHER ILL TREATS HIM AND HE FINDS MATERNAL LOVE IN PUSHPA. NANDU'S PARENTS SHIFT TO A NEW HOUSE AND NANDU AND PUSHPA ARE SEPARATED. NANDU PROMISES PUSHPA TO COME AND MEET HER WHEN HE GROWS UP. MEANWHILE ON THE INSISTENCE OF ANAND BABU'S BROTHER-IN-LAW, PUSHPA TELLS ANAND BABU NOT TO COME TO HER ANY MORE. YEARS LATER WHEN PUSHPA IS WORKING AS A MAID IN A HOTEL ANAND BABU BUMPS INTO HER. NANDU WHO HAS COME TO TOWN IN SEARCH OF PUSHPA BUMPS INTO ANAND BABU WHO BRINGS NANDU TO PUSHPA. NANDU TAKES PUSHPA TO HIS HOUSE AND GIVES HER THE STATUS OF HIS MOTHER.

Nandkishore Sharma alias Nandu is born in the Sharma family. His mother tragically passes away, leaving him in the care of his father who decides to re-marry a woman named Kamla. Kamla is not very kind to Nandu, who then seeks love and solace with a neighbour named Pushpa, who looks after him, feeds him, and even sings lullabies to get him to sleep. This does not auger well with Kamla, who severely beats up Nandu whenever she finds out that he has gone to meet Pushpa. Then his parents decide to move to another town, and Nandu tear[ully bids farewell to Pushpa, but her love for him remains in his heart forever. Years later, Nandu has grown up, his parents have passed away, his siblings are settled independently, and he himself is married. He takes a nostalgic journey to the same town where he used to reside as a child, and rents a room in the same locality. He asks around for a woman named Pushpa, hoping that a lot of people would remember her for her kindness and love. He is shocked to find out that Pushpa no longer lives there - and no one remembers her for her love and compassion only as a - prostitute.


Pushpa is a simple village girl who is thrown out of her house by her husband because she is unable to conceive. Dejected and homeless, she leaves her village and comes to the city where she is befriended by tout Nepal Babu, who sells her into prostitution. One day Anand, a wealthy man neglected by his ultra-modern wife, passes by her house of ill fame and is attracted by Pushpas sweet melidios voice. He begins to frequent the place. Nandoo, a child who stays nearby, is ill-treated by his step-mother and so, walks into Pushpas life and finds a mother in her. Like three lost souls they cling to one another in search of that elusive commodity called love. But an indifferent society compels them to part, only to meet years later when Nandoo has grown up and can now call Pushpa his mother without any hinderence.
