Story

Anari is a 1959 Indian Bollywood comedy, romance, musical, drama film released on Jan 01, 1959. The film is directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, produced by L. B. Lachman under banner named L. B. Films International.

Raj Kumar is a painter by profession, but is unable to earn a living. Unable to pay rent to his kind-hearted but foul-mouthed land lady, Mrs.D'Souza. One day Raj finds a wallet containing money, and he returns it to the owner, Ramnath. Pleased with his honesty, he employs Raj in his office. Raj meets with Ramnath's maid servant. Asha and soon they fall in love with each other. This all ends when Raj finds out that Asha is really Aarti, the niece of the employer. He then alienates himself from his employer & his daughter and looks after his ailing landlady. Unfortunately , she passes away suddenly. The police finds out that Mrs. D'Souza was poisoned. Raj is accused of poisoning her. What actually happened? Is Raj guilty? Was he first pretending to be an Anari?

The naive painter Raj (Kapoor) lodges with the devout, rather maternal Mrs DSa (Pawar). Raj falls in love with Aarti (Nutan), the niece of the wealthy pharmaceutics manufacturer Ramnath (Motilal) who is Rajs employer. To sidestep class differences, Aarti pretends to be her own maid. This startagem leads to problems aggravated when Mrs DSa dies after taking medicines made by Ramnaths company. Raj is accused of having poisoned her. Eventually Ramnath acknowledges responsibility for the crime. Although directed and edited by Mukherjee, the films cynical view of capital accumulation betrays Kapoors authorial signature (of Shri 420, 1955). The presence of Shailendra, Hasrat and Shankar-Jaikishen, close collaborators of the RK banner, as well as the expected Mukesh solo showing a philosophisin tramp (Kissi ki muskurahaton pe ho misar) underline Kapoors direct influence on the film.
