Gopal (Rajendra Kumar) is a skiing champion. He meets Usha (Sadhana) on his holidays at Jammu and Kashmir. Then they both fall in love. One day, Usha tells Gopal that she does not like the disabled. After spending his holidays in Kashmir and promising Usha that he will marry her, he heads back to Delhi, where his parents and a sister, Sarla, live. Along the way, he loses his a leg in a car accident.

Gopal becomes worried. He thinks Usha will not accept him as he is now disabled. Then he goes back to Delhi and he does not tell anything about Usha. In the meantime, Usha tries a lot to find him, but after having no sign of him, she begins to think that Gopal is dead.

Gopal's best friend, Ramesh (Feroz Khan), wants to marry Usha. After saying "no" several times, at Usha's parent's accepts on her behalf and Usha dutifully agrees to the marriage as well. But on the day of her wedding, something happens and Usha finds out that Gopal is in fact alive. Then this situation forms the climax of the movie.

In the picturesque Dal Lake a shikara boat was floating leisurely. The two lovers gazed longingly at each other. . "What are you contemplating?" "Just thingking I dont know much about you" "What do you want to knaow? Of my family? Of my position?" "No, all I want to know is how much do you love me and how long will will you continue to love me" "Usha! Man is not immortal. One day everyone has to die. So at present I can only promise to love you till the day of death." . Usha rested her head on his shoulders and the sun gragually disappear- ed behind the hills on the other side of the Lake. . The two shikars parted and journeyed in opposite directions. . After that the sun rose and set many times and in its golden rays the Dal Lake shone in silvery ripples. But the Shikaras were never seen again, and the two lovers did not ride in them. The lotus flowers lost their bloom, the Shalimar fountains stood silent and a sombre song echoed through the depths of Kashmir valley. . "Bedardi Balma Tujh Ko Mera Man Yaad Karta Hai" But the lover of whom Usha sung was hundered of mles away. The hand of cruel destiny had shattered the mirror of hopes and heart. He could no longer traverse the path of love. An accident ahd broken his heart. . A blind Fate and the bitter relalites of life combined to shatter the love of Usha and Gopal but......
