Ashok 1942

Ashok is a 1942 Indian Bengali action,historical film released on Oct 31, 1942. The film is directed by Ajoy Bhattacharya, produced by Modern Talkies under banner named Modern Talkies.

Learned Samudra near Pataliputra. Mahendra was supposed to go there. But could not go there. After giving birth to a child in a "Chandal" home she died. Hearing the news of a new born baby the shrine people came and took him to their place. He was named Nigrodh. After killing another brother Ashoke cleared his way to the throne. Then he concentrated himself in the thought of expanding his kingdom. Starting from Ganghar to Prag Jyotishpur his war-chariots kept rolling. Twelve years passed. Radhagupta advised Ashoke not to be reluctant about Nigrodh. His subjects might revolt taking Nigrodh side any day. So it would be wish to hipe him off. The crown Prince Mahendra came to know about that conspiracy. He was imprisoned for organizing people's revolution. Radhagupta sent a secret-killer to kill Nigrodh. But Nigrodh was survived miraculously. But the emperor knew Nigrodh was dead. Ashoke became untroubled. But as somebody had to declared crown prince, Mahendra in the prison was told that he had became the crown prince. Mahendra refused that honour. Angry Ashoke exiled Mahendra in Srabashi. Ashoke deputed one secret-killer to kill his son. Ashoke then called his second son Kunal. Kunal came to Pataliputra from Ujjaini. On his way he met Ashoke's ex-lover Tissya Rakshita. She was also supposed to go to the emperor's palace. Kunal picked her on his chariot. Getting Tissya; Rakshita back after a long time Ashoke made her the queen. On the day of Kunal's corporation emperor Ashoke entered the court with Kunal. At the same time monk Upagupta entered the court with Nigrodh. That was the first meeting of Ashoke and the monk. Ashoke liked the monk. The court adjourned on that day. Days passed. Ashoke gradually became unmindful. Upagupta had pervaded his mind. Everybody came to know that emperor had become ill. In the mean time Tissya Rakshita tried to own Kunal. Kunal refused her very badly became he loved Kanchanmala. Tissya Rakshita started to find scope for revenge. Radhagupta heard that revolution had been started in Taxilla. As Ashoke was ill, Tissya Rakshita suggested Kunal's name. Kunal reaching there came to know that the news of revolution was false and to his surpirse he saw an order signed by emperor himself to blind Kunal. Kunal was so shocked that he blinded himself. Slowly Ashoke came to know everything starting from the revolution in Taxilla to Kunal's blindness and for all these Tissya Rakshita was responsible. Ashoke furiously wanted to kill her but already she had committed suicide. Emperor love for Buddhism caused worry for Radhagupta. He instigated Ashoke again for war. Ashoke had an eye for Kalinga since long time back. So he destroyed Kalinga. A just after that monk Upagupta transformed Ashoke form "Chandashoke" to "Dharmashoke'. He sent his son Mahendra and daughter Sanghamitra to Singhal island to preach Buddhism.
