Story

Awara is a 1951 Indian Bollywood romance, musical, drama film released on Jan 01, 1951. The film is directed by Raj Kapoor, produced by Raj Kapoor under banner named R. K. Films.

The movie opens with a court scene where the convict Raj(Raj Kapoor) is being charged for alleged attempt of murder of Judge Raghunath(Prithviraj Kapoor). Raj's case is represented by Rita(Nargis) who dramatically enters the court to take up his case. The story follows her account of Raj's life. Judge Raghunath had earlier thrown out his pregnant wife Leela(Leela Chitnis) on suspicion of the child being that of the dacoit Jagga . Jagga wants the judge to doubt his wife in order to settle some old scores. The distressed wife gives birth to Raj amidst object poverty, but dreams of seeing her son a successful judge some day. Raj's childhood sweetheart is Rita but soon they separate as she leaves town. Raj has to leave his studies midway and is compelled to take up illegal activities under the patronge of Jaggu. He turns out to be a petty thief, but wants to reform. Circumstances however makes things difficult for him. Finally, Judge Raghunath comes to know who Raj is; and though Raj is convicted for 3 years; he promises Rita to come out and lead a honest life. The movie a powerful social comment on the despair of 50's youth, is regarded as an epic landmark in the history of Hindi Cinema, and a testimony of the famous Raj Kapoor -Nargis chemistry on screen; mesmerising stuff!

Having built his own studio at Chembur in Bombay with the profits of Barsaat (1949), Kapoor launched his most famous film, collaborating with the unit most closely associated with his work; scenarists Abbas and Sathe, song-writers Shailendra and Hasarat, art director Acherakar cameraman Karmakar and composers Shankar-Jaikrishen. Set in Bombay the plot concerns Raju (Kapoor), the estranged son of Judge Raghunath (P. Kapoor), who finds a surrogate father in the criminal Jagga (Singh the dacoit who caused Rajus mother (Chitnis) to be thrown out of her home. Raju eventually kills Jagga and tries to kill Raghunath, before he redeems himself in the eyes of the judge and wins the love of his childhood sweetheart, Rita (Nargis), who is now the lawyer defending him in court. The very intensity of the oedipal melodrama, enacted by the Kapoor family itself, spills over into a kind of hallucinatory pictorialism (the dream sequence, the prison sequence at the end, the design of the judges mansion) and underpinned some of the most remembered songs of the 50s (Awara hoon, Ghar aya mera pardesi and Dum bharke udhar mooh phere, o chanda). The spectacular 9dream sequence which took three months to shoot was apparently added on at the end, to hike up its market value. This was also Kapoors first fairy-tale treatment of class division in India, whose nexus of authority (power, patriarchy and law) explictly excludes the hero. Its main tenet, presented through Raghunath, is the feudal notion of status: the son of a thief will always be a thief, a view that villain Jagga sets out to disprove by making Raju a theif. Rajus patricide (he kills Jagga and is arrested for attempting to murder Raghunath) tries to break out of the contradictions set against an alternative, post-colonial reinvention on an infantile Utopia in which everyone can fully belong, a condition symbolised by Nargis who is both the heors conscience and reward. Kapoors latest treatments of the same contraditions increasingly took on the frog prince fairy-tale structure (Shri 420, 1955; Mera Naam Joker, 1970), mapped on to the middle/working-class divide. The film launched Kapoor and Nargis as major stars in parts of the USSR, the Arab world and Africa, widely but wrongely believed to be the first erotic swimsuit scene. That choche had earlier been deployed by Master Vinayak in Brahmachari (1938). Check out this page for more updates on Awara.
