Story

Baishe Srabon is a 2011 Indian Bengali thriller, musical, crime film released on Sep 30, 2011. The film is directed by Srijit Mukherji.

Four murders have taken place in Kolkata over a period of eight months, and in each case, there has been a celebrated piece of Bengali poem found beside the corpse. A young cop, on the trail of this serial killer, seeks the assistance of a suspended and tainted cop, who is an expert on the subject. There is also an eccentric poet who has violent fits of anger and takes off on nightly sojourns. Can the young cop and the experienced one prevent the next murder?

The film initially will seem as a take of on the ‘Stoneman Murders’ which took place in Kolkata in the 1980s, but the case was never solved. The victim always used to be a pavement dweller who would have his head smashed by a stone. The difference here is that the victims are not necessarily pavement dwellers, but also prostitutes and other people of the lower section of the society. Investigating this case is Abhi who is asked to take the help of Prabir, a brilliant ex cop suspended because of his behaviour and the way he treated criminals. He is a care free, foul mouthed ruthless cop who decides to assist Abhi on the request of Abhi’s superior who was his classmate. They discover that when all the victims get bumped off, the killer leaves some poetry behind on a paper which is by some great Bengali poet or the other who is no longer alive. They zero in on Nibaran, an ex criminal and an eccentric poet who is struggling to make his end meet and always seems to be calling up ‘Rabindranath’.He even commits suicide later on and the case is closed as he is considered to be the killer. Now! Now! Just when you thought when the case has been solved and the film will end, comes the real ‘big’ twist in the tale which will ‘surprise’ most as it comes from nowhere out of blue and reveals the real identity of the killer.

Several murders have taken place throughout the city of Kolkata. A serial killer is believed to be responsible. The modus operandi being that the killer always carries out the murder according to verses in Bengali poetry. He leaves behind the verses next to the victims. The police are baffled, with their lead detective Abhijit Pakrashi (Parambrata Chatterjee) struggling to solve the case, causing his relationship with his live-in girlfriend, Amrita Mukherjee (Raima Sen) to fall apart as well. This leads his superior deciding to bring back an ex-cop, Prabir (Prosenjit Chatterjee) to help solve the case. Prabir, who was earlier suspended for orchestrating a fake encounter, is also well known for his ill temperament and foul mouth. Now Prabir and Pakrashi must work together to catch the serial killer before another innocent loses his life. On the other hand Amrita and her friend Surya Sinha (Abir Chatterjee)- both journalists are ordered by their boss to do a thorough research on various serial killers for a 13-episode long series for their channel where the thirteenth man will be someone from the present, someone who's still very much alive. Meanwhile, a mad poet, Nibaron (Gautam Ghosh) thinks himself as a poet of Hungry Generation, wandering the empty streets of Kolkata at night, reciting poems. Amrita takes the responsibility of inquiring about the living serial killer and goes to a jail where the head recalls of a serial killer named 'Rafique Ahmed' and asks her to go through the profile of a man who was his only confidant in his eighteen years of imprisonment which turns out to be Nibaron Chakraborty! Amrita and Surya goes to Nibaron's house to question him and are greeted by his servant, Swapan. There they get convinced that he has indeed lost it when he says that he has a meeting with 'Rabindranath'. They're almost successful in extracting information about Rafique when Surya interrupts and angers him by mentioning the fire incident in the Book-fair of which he was proven guilty. While in the process of investigating the case further, the same Abhijit spots Amrita and Surya together. Upset and jealous Abhijit nearly walks off the case when at night he comes to Prabir's house and in a drunken state pours his heart out to him where it is revealed that Abhijit lost his father at a young age and also why he prefers to stay away from alcohol as it used to unleashe the beast within his father. Prabir also confesses of having lost his wife and child but being dutiful enough to resume his work from the very next day and encourages him to be strong. Surya takes Amrita to a graveyard and announces that he would propose her in a few days. A cop spots them and they land up in a police station after Amrita slaps the cop. A drunk Abhijit comes for their rescue when the inspector recognises Amrita as Abhijit's girlfriend and calls him after which Abhijit and Amrita reconcile. The next day while discussing about poets and poems at random, the cop duo- Prabir and Abhijit hit the bull's eye as they deduce that the killer is killing people on the same dates as some famous Bengali poets have died. They search of all the possible days when the killer could strike and find out that the nearest of them all is 29 June- Michael Madhusudan Dutt's death anniversary! Amrita shares all that has been happening, including the interview with Nibaron. This convinces Abhijit that he has got the man. On the other side, Swapan- Nibaron's servant, comes to meet Prabir telling him everything about his employer adding that he is now scared of him! Both Abhijit and Prabir keep a watch on Nibaron's house the same night when he is expected to kill another innocent. A hooded figure comes out of the house but it turns out to be Swapan who says, that he was coming to them out of fear. Reaching there they find out that Nibaron has committed suicide! The case gets closed. After a month or so where everyone were getting on with their lives. Rabindranath Tagore's death anniversary (Baaishey Srabon)arrives . Prabir, who has now got on very well with the three youngsters, invites Abhijit for some important work where he meets a man named 'Rabindranath'. But what shocks him was Swapan turning out to be Prabir's servant Kaanai! There its finally revealed by Prabir himself that he was the mastermind behind the murders with Kaanai, an ex-convict carrying them out. He had vengeance on his mind as he thought his suspension was an insult given the fact that he lost his family but still gave his hundred percent to the police force and concludes that today will be the day when the last killing would take place and shoots himself. The initial part of the movie has some resemblance with the 1995 movie Se7ven directed by David Fincher.
