Story

Bamanabatar is a 1939 Indian Bengali mythology film released on 1939. The film is directed by Hari Bhanja.

When a quarrel was about to start between the gods and the demons Lord Narayan appeared as an enchanting woman and took the responsibility of distributing nectar. The enchanting woman started distributing nectar initially to the gods. Bali, the demon's king recognised Lord Narayan and started meditating. As she was not giving nectar to the demons there was chaos. Indra was so agitated that he killed king Bali while he was meditating. The demons carried away the dead body to their capital. The master of all demons Sukracharya restored the life of Bali. He also fortified king Bali with special arms. Bali went to heaven to punish Indra. The commander-in-chief of king Bali's army was Prahlad. Briharpati adviced the gods to leave heaven as they had no chance of winning the battle against Bali. On entering heaven Bali found nobody there except goddess Lakshmi. Bali took her away with him. He started the horse-sacrifice. Suddenly there appeared a dwarf. The dwarf was actually Lord Narayan in disguise. On the advice of Brihaspati the dwarf had come to the place of sacrifice and asked for alms. Sukracharya recognised the dwarf as Lord Narayan and tried to stop Bali from giving him alms. But Sukracharya failed and king Bali asked the dwarf what he wanted. The dwarf replied that he wanted only a little bit of land to place his three legs. King Bali agreed to offer that much land. The dwarf became a huge figure. He placed his one leg on earth, another on heaven. Then he inquired about where to place his third leg which had emerged from his naval. Bali was speechless on seeing all these. Just at that moment queen Vindhya advised the king to place his head under the third foot. Accordingly Bali placed his head and the huge dwarf placed his third leg over the head. The union of the devotee and god was finally done.
