Story

Bedagh is a 1965 Indian Bollywood film released on 1965. During the Christine Keeler crisis in Englannd, Landans mass-circulated daily the Daily Mirror conduction a poll t know whether illegitimate sex-relationship before or after marriage affects the matrimonial bliss of a couple. Of the 3,000,000 married some even mothers - and unmarried young women, interviewed, 90 percent opined that sex, legitimate or illegitimate, has nothing to do with matrimony The resutl of this poll is a pointer to the rationalised sex-culture of the west, where everything is judged in terms of material benefit-physical or commercial. . In contrast to this rationalised cult of the ultramodern industrial age, is the age-old Indian culture, which is governed by a code of love, loyalty and sacrifice for the benefit of every memebr in a family. This culture was withstood the test of time and Indian society has survived as a massive force against the continuous onslaught of the foreign conquerors for centuries. . Bedaag" pinpoints the fact that a mother alone is responsble for the future and the moral standard of her daughter. She can make her daughter either a Christine Keelr or a Seeta. The mother of Lata, in the film, brings up her daughter as an ultra-modern play-girl, who believes in free love, gay parties and boozing sorties. Lata is perpetually at war with her neighbour and class-fellow Manju, who lives by the ideals of Seeta. The rivalry between the two reaches its inevitable climax when both the girls falls in love with Rajesh, who avoids Lata and ardently loves Manju. . Lata delivers an illegitimate child (the inevitable even for any play girl) and Manju pressed by circumstances to save the life of her father, has take the blame upon herself, for a paltry sum of five thousand rupees, Manju is now forced to bring the child as her own and suffer stigma. Hence the two divergent cultures - one of ruthless materialistic selfishness and the other of poignant self-sacrifice come in direct conflict with each other. . In between there are hilarious sequences in which a do-nothing husband Ghashyam has to keep the house and play a wife to his consort Shobha who is the bread-earning working girl.
