Biutiful is so horrifically sad that watching it renewed my affection for Bollywood. I immediately wanted to run out and get a dose of songs, family values and unbridled optimism. Biutiful is a searing look at the trials of a man who doesn’t have long to live, but a long list of things to put right before he dies. And director Innaritu (Amores Perros, 21 Grams, Babel) does absolutely nothing to make life easier for him. If anything, he mercilessly heaps his path with one tragic turn after another. Javier Bardem’s sublime performance, as a down-on-his-luck criminal Uxbal, uplifts a film that can be a bit of a downer with its generous unspooling over 147 minutes.
