Bonpalashir Padabali 1973

Bonpalashir Padabali is a 1973 Indian Bengali drama film released on Feb 09, 1973. The film is directed by Uttam Kumar.

This is a tragic tale about a handful of characters of the village of Bonpolashi. We have Girija (Bikash Roy), his wife & their daugheter Bimala along with his brother Girindra (Nirmal Kumar) & his wife (Madhabi Mukherjee) & their daughter Pramila. There is also the progressive Dr Roy (Atul Chatterjee), a doctor who has lost a leg in the second world war and is now serving the poor and deprived villagers of Bonpalashi for free. There are lots of parallel & diverse incidents happening in the movie which are not directly associated which one another. Out of these the 3 most significant are the romance & marriage between the new B.D.O. Prabhakar & Bimala, the mission taken by the villagers to set up an educational institution & finally the subtle, sensitive relation between an aspiring driver Udash (Uttam Kumar) & the village belle Padma. Udash accidentally marries Laxmi, a cynical woman who constantly troubles Udash & his father throughout the day. Udash was forced by Laxmi's father Dasarath, a senior bus driver to marry her if he wanted to fulfill his goal of becoming a driver. After marrying, though Udash got the licence & became a bus driver, his life went wayward in association with the bungled Laxmi. At this point comes in Padma, the daugher of Udash's father's friend, with whom previously he was destined to get married. Udash is mersmerised with Padma's beauty & sensitivity. He falls in love with her. When Laxmi gets to know about this she gets mad with rage & anges & in the darkness of night, smashes a sharp chopper on the back of Padma's father & kills him. Then she commits suicide. The romantic Udash was on duty when all these mishaps accured. After Laxmi's demise Udash wants to marry Padma, but the lady refuses him out of social fear even though she loves him. Udash tries to force Padma & she abandons him & takes refuge in Dr. Roy. Udash turns into a debauch & an alcohalic. He becomes obsessed in Padma's love. When he hears a baseless & incorrect news that Padma was having an affair with the doctor, he comes to murder the doctor with a knife. But the doctor was not at home. In the darkness & under the influence of liquor Udash stabs Padma. The court of law sentences Udash to death infront of his father. Udash himself loved Padma & did not at all stab her purposefully & motivatedly. In the end we see Bonpalashi becoming an abyss of lonelines as all the protogonists leave the village for various reason except Girija & his Chhota Maa.
