Story

Boot Polish is a 1954 Indian Bollywood social film released on 1954. The film is directed by Prakash Arora, produced by Raj Kapoor under banner named R. K. Films.

Boot Polish is a great piece of work in Indian cinema. This is the story of about John Chacha (David) & the two kids Bhola & Belu (Ratan Kumar & Baby Naaz). Bhola & Belu were staying with her aunty Kamladevi (Chand Burque) who was a prostitute in a slum area. Kamla was very rude & arrogant in her behaviour & often beat up children. She was forcefully sending Bhola & Belu to beg outside & earn money by begging. John was very upset with Bhola, Belu & all the children who beg on the streets. He often teaches them a lesson on how to live their life. He teaches them that hands are given by god working & not for begging. Bhola & Belu get usually inspired from the words of John Chacha & they start saving money to buy a brush & a polish cream to work as a boot polisher. They had to go through lot of trouble to save money but finally they managed to buy the brush & a boot polish cream. They started working as a boot polisher instead of begging. But still John was hoping, that children are not meant to work but are meant to study in school, living their childhood in peace & calm. This film is all about how these two children cope up with all their troubles & live their life as miserably as one ever had imagined & how they ended up in a school. This film is about how John Chacha inspires these two children by their inspirational words. This film is about how he teaches a person to live a life. An award winning performance by John Chacha & those two kids directed by none other than the showman, Raj Kapoor.

Following his collaboration with Abbas on Awara (1951), Kapoor preside over and allegeldly directed most of this social melodrama credited to his assistant. It is a story about two orphan children, Bhola (R. Kumar) and Belu (Naaz), who are forced to become beggars in Bombay by their wicked aunt Kamala Chachi. They are shown the straight and narrow path by the one-legged bootlegger, Uncle John (David), who encourages them to take up the honest trade of polishing shoes. The film established a ralist precedent for, e.g., Salaam Bombay (1988), which replaced its sentimental optimism with an unrelenting misberabilism. Kapoors film can be seen as an allegorical representation of the newly independent infant Indian nations. As the upbeat marching song Nannhe munne bachche suggests, children can control their own destiny. Kapoor makes a guest appearance asleep on a trian seat, being mistaken by Bhola as Raj Kapoor the film star and silenced by the girl who sensibly remarks: Everybody pretends to be Raj Kapoor. A shortened version was released in the USA in 1958. Check out this page for more updates on Boot Polish.
