Chanakya is a 1939 Indian Bengali biographical, historical film released on 1939. The film is directed by Sisir Kumar Bhaduri.

King Mahapadmananda was on the throne of Pataliputra but he was always busy with wine and women. His only advisor was Bachal, his brother-in-law. The real heir to the throne Chandragupta was on exile. His mother Mura was imprisoned at the royal jail as per the instructions of Bachal. Chanakya was passing his days in a lonely village, Kusumpur with his only daughter Atrey. One day Chanakya left for Pataliputra. When he reached Pataliputra it was evening then. Chanakya found royal orders in the walls of the kingdom. It was written that Chandragupta Maurya was a revolutionary and anybody catching him alive or dead would get a reward of thousand gold coins. In the meanwhile Chanakya heard Sree Mahapadananda's latest announcement that the tax for land, water, agriculture and business was doubled. He got worried. He returned to Kusumpur. Returning home he found that, in his absense the dacoits had looted his house and his servant could not save Atreyi. Chanakya became mad and went to Pataliputra. The king called Katyam, an old learned man. Katyam requested Chanakya to be the head of the funeral ceremony of the king's grandmother. But Bachal insulted Chanakya. The insulted Chanakya asked for royal justice. The king ordered his brother-in-law to turn the bramhin out. Chanakya was so angry that he cursed the king saying that the Nanda Dynasty would be destroyed within a very short time. A new handsome Indian youth got trained in warfare from Selucus, the commander-in-chief of the great Greek empire. It was revealed that he was Chandragupta, the prince of Magadh in exile. Chandragupta was in love with the legendary Greek beauty Helen. Chandragupta came back to Magadh and contacted Katyam. He released his mother from jail and then went to the king Chandragupta for help. Chandragupta met Chanakya here. After this the Nandy dynasty was destroyed, Selucus was defeated in the hands of Chandragupta and Chandragupta married Helen.
