Story

Chhalia is a 1960 Indian Bollywood romance, musical, social film released on Jan 01, 1960. The film is directed by Manmohan Desai, produced by Subhash Desai under banner named Subhash Pictures.

The tragic-comic story of Chhalia, a naive, simple-minded young man who comes to the city and witnesses the harsh side of life; and falls in love with a young woman named Shanti, only to find out that she is married but separated from her husband, Kewal, and adopted son, Anwar. He puts all he can in an effort to locate Kewal and re-unite the family.

Chhalia is a touching tale of todays youth, trons by wants and obligations. The story centres around Shankar, Sunita and Amar. Though Shankar is poor yet his obligations are big and so he moves about in borowed suits and cars. While young Sunita who is rich, poses as a poor school teacher to win his love. - Shanker: an ordinary clerk in a big factory - his pay packet too small his obligations in life too big - becomes Chhalia - move about in fresh suits borrowed from a helpful laundry and sleek cars borrowed from a friendly garage owner, poses as a rich playboy and makes some big deals through pretty rich girls - believe the end will justify the means. . Sunita the owner of the factory in which Shanker works - hated by all her employees including Shanker whom she loves - to win his heart poses as poor school teacher. . Amar the two faced manager of the factory - sweet in words, cruel in deeds - sympathises with workers - incites them to revolt and crushes them with an iron hand.
Desais directorial debut is unlikely drama about Indias Partition.] Shanti (Nutan) is married Kewal (Rehman) in Lahore on the eve of Independence. When the nation is divided, Shantis family and her husband migrate to Delhi, leaving her behind. She finds shelter for five years with the Afghan bandit Abdul Rehman (Pran) who has a sister of Shantis age acroos the border. Shanti bears a son, Anwar (Moppet Raja), and when she travels to Delhi with her child her husband disowns her, as does her father. She finds shelter with another generous criminal, Chhalia (Kapoor), who falls in love with her. Abdul Rehman comes to Delhi to pursure an old feud with Chhalia and threatens to kidnap Shanti. After an extended fight sequence, the two bandits call a truce. On the train back to Pakistan, Rehman is reunited with his sister. Chhalia arranges a reconcilation between Shanti and Kewal, renouncing between Shanti and Kewal, renouncing his own chance at happiness. The film alludes to aspects of realism derived from radical literature as well as from Kapoors presence (of Phir Subah Hogi, 1958), but Desai seems impatient with the finer point of plot of structure, a tendency that would later lead to his virtual abandonment of temporally coherent plots in the Bachan films of the 70s and 80s. The film had several hit songs including the communal-harmony number Chhalia mera naam, sung by Mukesh. [Source: Encl] Check out this page for more updates on Chhalia.
