Story

Chhoti Maa is a 1952 Indian Bollywood social film released on Jan 01, 1952. The film is directed by Hem Chander.
The family of Yadav consists of his wife Annapurna, his brother Madhav wife, Bindubasini. Yadav is a person of moderate means and has striven hard to educate Madhav who is now a lawyer. Married to Bindubasini a few years ago he is practising now in the local court. The only child in the family is Amulya, Yadavs son and, as it is, the Madhavs are childless couple. . Bindubasini comes of a very rich family. Noble yet haughty in her temperament, she is a tremendous contradiction by herself-a jumble of different reflexes. Yet the family knows that basically she is one of the sweetest souls one has ever known. . Annapurna does take no time to understand the increasing haughtiness of her temper. A young woman married, yet remaining childless, must develop abnormalities in herself. As a remedy, Annpurna literally throws the child in her life saying consider him to be yours. . From now on a miraculous change takes place in Bindus life. Not only does she start considering herself as the mother of the child, but all her activities are now centred round the welfare of Amulya. Often the family witness scenes of high comedy when Bindu remonstrates with Annapurna, for things concerining Amulya. . The real trouble begins when Amulya grows up. He is now a student in the local school. Now Yadavs poor sister Elokeshi comes into this house with her son Narendra who also has to join the school where Amulya is reading. . Narendra from all accounts is disappointing. Definitely he is not a desirable company for Amulya who is a brilliant student in his school. Bindu wants them to go away. Annapurna protests. Then Bindu detects a cigratte-end in Amulyas pocket. The climax in this episode reaches when Bindu comes to know that Amulya is noted for his good conduct, has been fined lately by the school authorities for misconduct and the fine has been paid by Annapurna secretly. . Bindu starts abusing Annapurna in a lanuguage which is insulting "Where do you get the money to waste like this ? It is either my money or my husbands. Are you not Ashamed?" Even thoughn Bindu is shouting in the interest of Amulya who is Annapurnas son, the latter cannot bear it any longer. She says " I take this oath that if I, my husband and my son live under the same roof with you anymore, I would see Amulya dead". . The two families are seperate. In their newly constructed house built with Bindus money, Madhav shifts with Bindu, Elokeshi and Narendra. But what would be a new house with better conditions of existence do, for a woman who has for years devoted her whole life as mother to Amulya?
