Chitchor is a 1976 Indian Bollywood comedy film released on 1976. The film is directed by Basu Chatterjee, produced by Tarachand Barjatya under banner named Rajshri Productions.

Pitamber Chaudhri, headmaster of a school in Madhupur, India, has a daughter named Geeta. Geeta is a typical village belle, naive, and childish, and always in the company of a little boy who is her neighbour.

Pitamber's older daughter, Meera, who lives in Mumbai, informs Pitamber of the arrival of a young engineer who could be a possible match for Geeta. Pitamber is asked to welcome him and treat him well. Without further question, Pitamber and family do just that when the visitor arrives by train. Vinod, the newcomer, takes an instant liking to the family and to Geeta in particular, even teaching her to sing. The family begins to talk about the possibility of Vinod and Geeta marrying, and life is good until another letter from Meera arrives. Pitamber is shocked to read that the engineer whom Meera was sending to meet the family has not yet arrived, but will be coming soon. Vinod is only an overseer who happened to come early, as his boss was delayed and could not make it as planned.

The family is disappointed. They asks Geeta to stop seeing Vinod and turn her attention to Sunil, the engineer, but Geeta cannot forget Vinod. Sunil is fond of Geeta and agrees to the engagement, which is quickly arranged. When Vinod hears of the engagement, he prepares to leave the village before the ceremony. Upon hearing this, Geeta insists that she will marry Vinod, against the wishes of her family. She rushes to the train station, but not before the train leaves. Disheartened, she turns back and is received and driven back to her house by Sunil. To her surprise, Vinod is at the house. All misconceptions have been cleared up, and Geeta and Vinod are to be engaged.

A simple tale of mixed identities. It tells of how a village head-master and his wife mistake Vinodas an engineer and allow their younger daughter to freely mix up with him. Vinods boss, Sunil, who consequently arrives on the scene wants to get married to Geeta. Geeta at first resigns to her fate of having to marry Sunil under the compulsion of her heart. The misunderstanding is cleared and the lovers are united. ** Meera is concerned for her younger sisters marriage. She writers to her father, Mr. Chaudhri, headmaster of the school in Madhupur that a young, highly qualified Engineer will arrive to their town to work on a bridge project, whom she feels will make an ideal husband for Geeta. . The young new comer Vinod, soon becomes intimate with the Chaudhri family and the companionship develops into a light, breezy romance between Vinod and Geeta, during their singing lessons. . Soon after Mr.Chaudhri receives another letter that the young Engineer is still to arrive and there has been a misunderstandig as the young Engineer is Sunil, Vinods boss and friend. . Geeta is now asked to see less of Vinod and see more of Sunil. Meanwhile, Sunil declares that the girl suits him and wishes to marry her, as he is in love. Her parents inform her of the engagement but Geeta rebels and declares that she is really in love with Vinod.
