The job of a promo is to send out accurate pointers to its target audience. The gist of the premise, the essence of what the characters will be, an extract of the milieu... one needs to furnish a general idea of what to expect when the spectator saunters into the cineplex to watch the film. Arbaaz Khan and Abhinav Singh Kashyap had a tough responsibility on their shoulders when they embarked upon DABANGG. As luck would have it, DABANGG was hailed

As a producer, Arbaaz Khan hit the nail on the head with the first installment of DABANGG. As a director, he establishes his credentials with DABANGG 2. He gets the mood of the lead actor, has the feel of Brand Dabangg and executes it the way it is meant to be - flashy, with lots of action interspersed with songs; this time from Zandu Balm to Fevicol. There's a double dose of oomph factor as well, with both Munni (Malaika Arora Khan) and Kareena Kapoor

Yes, Chulbul (Salman) swings it a second time - and hits home harder. Dabanng 2 is actually a better film than the first, tighter, brighter and sharper. Featuring explosive action and fine detailing - the Pandeys move to Kanpur where cows block the streets, Chulbul asking his hawaldar, "Hum kisi khet mein ghus aaye hain?", and being told, "Nahin sir, main chauraha hai," - Dabanng 2 never takes its eye off its heart - Salman Khan. This is an unapologetic star

The first five minutes have flown by. His jeep’s broken through brick walls. His kicks have sent a few flying. And fatak! The frame freezes over. “Salman Khan as Chulbul Pandey”. The entire theatre orgasms. And noisily at that. This is not cinema as we know it. It’s a carnival out there; playing at a theatre near you. Yes, Dabangg 2 is like a party celebrating the popularity and success of Dabangg. And that’s not entirely a bad thing

Hello again. Bollywood’s Rajinikanth is back to defy the law of gravity, ooze levity and talk with brevity. So he zooms in mid-air to bash up goons galore, takes up cudgels against an about-to-be-reelected politician, and speaks in the calculated sentences of a mathematician. And truth be told there’s no point in resisting him. Because Dabangg 2 aka Cop Chulbul Pandey aka Robin Hood, directed by Arbaaz Khan, is unpretentious if nothing else

Why did the Khan brothers decide to make a sequel of the 2010 blockbuster Dabangg? Because the film grossed Rs. 215 crore, placing it at the No. 4 slot in the list of “Bollywood’s Top Ten All-Time Worldwide Grossers” (IMDB)? Can’t be just that because Bodyguard sits at No. 3 in that list, having grossed Rs. 230 crore. So was it because Dabangg was bhai Arbaaz’s first production? Maybe. But the real reason was that Chulbul Pandey

Given that Dabangg 2 is a family production in every sense of the term - Salman Khan stars, his brother Arbaaz directs, Arbaaz's wife Malaika Arora produces, and their sister Alvira Agnihotri does costumes - you can't help but wonder why no one thought of roping in their father, veteran screenwriter Salim Khan, to slap the script into shape. Because while there's some fun to be had watching Chulbul Pandey bash up the bad guys again and share a tender romance

Salman Khan has become the new Dharmendra. Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaspheming for effect. When I say 'the new Dharmendra,' I don't mean the fine actor from Satyakam or Chupke Chupke, or even the ridiculously charming hero from Sholay. I mean the guy Dharam turned into later, when he became incorrigibly obsessed with canine blood. And that isn't necessarily a bad thing at all, given how fondly we look at even latter-day Dharam Paaji

Apun public hai, public. Kisi ko bhi kuch bhi bol sakta hai. Jismein apna paisa vasool nahi uska dabba gul. Munna's argument in Rangeela is both practical and effective. And it's in the honest presence of these collective Munnas and Milis that you truly discover (and enjoy) the epic accomplishments of characters like Chulbul Pandey. That he is played by another influential Khan, Salman, known for his undeniable and indescribable hold

In a scene from the film, Arbaaz Khan's character Makkhi suddenly realizes one fine day that he should be doing something in life and goes to his elder cop brother (Salman Khan's Chulbul Pandey) pleading even he wishes to be of some worth and thereby be a policeman. And in the next scene we see Makkhi working as a cop. Perhaps that's what Arbaaz Khan seems to have done off the screen too. He turns an instantaneous director while relying on Salman Khan

As a quick-fix lyrical device, Zandu balm is probably only a hop, skip and jump away from Fevicol adhesive. But the move from Malaika Arora Khan to Kareena Kapoor is nothing less than a quantum leap. The Dabangg item number had worked wonders for both Munni and the brand, but the bonding agent that the sensuous danseuse extols in the sequel does not quite stick. So, the obvious question: is Dabangg 2 really twice as nice as the original action flick

What this film needed was personality and character; what it’s left with is sameness. But that’s probably enough for Salman Khan fans.

My review of Dabangg ended with a plea for a better story for Chulbul. Like so much else in Dabangg 2, that too remains the same. Can someone please write a terrific plot for this terrific character?

Dabangg 2 is every inch of the way the critic-proof film that it is meant to be. No matter how many holes you might spot in its uncomplicated, wafer-thin narrative edifice, Bollywood’s most bankable megastar’s onscreen deeds, at a bit of a stretch, would serve to paper over all of them.

A sequel to this sequel may be too tempting to pass up for Chulbul and gang. I just hope they don’t kill it with same old-ness. “pyaar se nahin, thappad se bhi nahin, boredom se darr lagta hai.”

While the film lacks in being a comprehensive package, it goes all the way in becoming yet another celebration of ‘brand Salman’. Every other character and element of the film just helps him entertain you for two and a half hours. If you’re looking for meaningful cinema, it is better you give this one a miss.
