Deedar is a 1951 Indian Bollywood romance, musical, social film released on Jan 01, 1951. The film is directed by Nitin Bose, produced by Rajendra Jain under banner named Filmkar Productions.

Shyamu (dilip kumar) and mala (nargis) are childhood friends but as fate would have it mala is rich and shyamu is poor malas father doesn’t approve their friendship and removes shyamu from his house shyamu meets with an accedent and becomes blind shyamu grows up with champa (nimmi) and her brother. After 4 years mala is now engaged to kishore (ashok kumar) who is a doctor. Shyamu has now become a street singer. Kishore & mala oneday listens shyamus song and is impressed by his songs. They become friends. Kishore decides to take him to mumbai and operate his eyes so that he could see. The operation is successful shyamu oneday says that his love is mala. Kishore is upset but still promises to introducet him to mala but also strikes a deal that shyamu should only meet kala and should not speak anything about their childhood bit slowly kishore realises that he cant win against shyamus love and decides to sacrifece. But the twist in the tale comes when shyamu learns that kishore is engaged to mala and mala also loves kishore shyamu now feels guilty of being selfish. What will he do now? Will he come in between mala and kishore or will he go back to champa who loves him? The climax of movie is the high point of movie.

Adapting much of the Saigal type of melodrama (Street Singer, 1938), the tale opens with adolescents Shamu (D. Kumar) and childhood sweetheart Mala (Nargis). Malas rich father disapproves and when the children have an accident while horse-riding (a porten of the tragey to come), he has Shamu and his mothe evicted. The trauma kills the mother and turns Shamu blind. He is rescued and brought up by Champa (Nimmi) and her canny guardian, Choudhary. Champa loves Shamu but he cannot forget Mala. Dr Kishore (A.Kumar), an eye surgeon moved by the music Shamu sings on the streets, restores the heros eyesight. Shamu then sees that Mala, to whom he has dedicated his life, is married to his benefactor, Dr Kishore, and he put his eyes out again. Dilip Kumars best-known tragic performance cleary evokes the Oedipus legend with blindness signifying an escape from the unbearable present and mourning for a lost innocence. The film, however splits its lead protagonists, e.g. through turn-wipes repeatedly juxtaposing Dilip against Ashok Kumar and Nargis against Nimmi, a technique that evokes the Bengali literary melodrama (as does the cliche of the eye operation). In spite of the many unimaginative and madlin sequences, some attempts at realism resemble aspects of Satyajit Rays approach, e.g. the long track along the kitchen floor in Champas hovel or the changing light patterns on the ceiling behind Shamu when the sings Naseeb dar pe tere azmaane aya hoon. Bimay Roy edicted the film. [Source: Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema] Check out this page for more updates on Deedar.
