Devata is a 1978 Indian Bollywood social film released on Nov 03, 1978. The film is directed by S. Ramanathan, produced by N. N. Sippy.

Tony has been in love with Mary for quite sometime, and they decide to be very intimate, and as a result Mary gets pregnant. Shortly after this, the police come looking for Tony, to charge him with murder, and Tony disappears. Mary gives birth to a daughter, Lily, and lives with Dr. Shambhunath and his wife. Years later, Tarun Kumar enters Mary's life and identifies himself as Tony. Mary is delighted and relieved. Unfortunately for Tony, Police Inspector Lawrence also recognizes him, and it is then Tony must decide to run away again or face arrest and imprisonment.

The film tells the story of young, angry orphan boy Tony, in three phases-his youth, marriage and family life. The death of Tonys wife and betrayal of his daughter by a playboy makes him kill his daughters paramour in a fit of temper. Tony escapes from jail and years later returns to the same village to fulfil the vow given to Father Fernandes of building an orphanage and school. Always, one step ahead of the law, he manages to give his daughter-a happy married life-with the son of a police officer who hunts him down. Tony surrenders himself to the law.
