RAJASTHAN is the land of glory and gallantry, where the gallant Rajputs ruled with honour and won respect and love of the people. Rajasthan, weher they laid down their lives for thier pledge, love and loyalty. . In such a land of romance and royal glory, long long ago, there ruled the great King Nala Singh and the people of narvalgarh were happy. But as ill fate decreed the state of Narvalgarh suffered from the turhless ravages of famine. Raja Nala Singh and his beloved queen Damayanti with their four-year-prince Dhola left their famine-stricken country to seek refuge at Pungalgarh, the state which was ruled by a powerful Rajput King Buddha Singh, who considered himself a master of the game of dice. . "I pledge my word of honour that who-so-ever will defeat me in the game of dice, will get a reward of his choice. The defeated will rot in prison!" . Raja Nala Singh defeated Buddha Singh in the game of dice and said, "I win and you shall make good your pledge!" . "What is your demand?" "I demand that your young daughter Maru be married to my son prince Dhola!" . And while young Dhola and loverly little Rajput-belle Maru were about to be married in the right royal manner, due to bad luck and ill omen, their clothes caught fire. They were rescued immediately. . "This Maru, the princess is bad luck incarnate!" said Raja Nala Singh and Queen Damayanti as they left the place in a hurry before both the Rajas took out their swords to fight. . "This is the question of my honour! We can never stand such an insult" snarled Buddha Singh who, in the ensuing scuffle succumbed to death. . Nala Singh and Damayanti with thier son Dhola left them, while lovely Maru wept and wept tillher eyes turned red! Years rolled by........ . One day Prince Dhola, now a young Rajput of full manly stature arrived in the jungle of PUngalgarh while hunting. In a wood, full of colourful flowers and green goliage, Prince Dhola behaeld a spectacle of grace, charm and beauty in youthful damsel playing on the side of a little pond. . "Ah, she is beautiful, charming beyound words!" with this thought he madly fell in love! . That young and beautiful maiden was none else but Maru, unconscious of the fact that they were already once united in a holy wed-lock. . When Nala Singh and Damayanti learnt about Dholas affair with Maru they warned him not to ever visit Pungalgarh again. "This is our command ment!" . Prince Dhola, whose heart always beat for his lady love Maru, could never understand as to why he was forbidden to visit Pungalgarh! . Meanwhile a lovely garden-girl Rewa attracted Prince Dhola. With her seductive charm she nearly made Dhola forget Maru. . Prince Dhola now did not remember Maru, who, languishing in separation still entertained hope that her hearts desire will surely be fulfilled. On the day of Gouri Pooja, she came to know that she was the lawfully wedded wife of Prince Dhola. . When Raja Nala Singh and his queen Damayanti left the country for the holy pilgrimage, Rawas uncle took the opportunity to grab the reins of the Kingdom, making Prince Dhola a mere puppet. . And Dholas true lady-love, Maru sang the songs of separation that made the sands of the Rajasthan desert blow into a terrific storm. Check out this page for more updates on Dhola Maru.
