Story

Dil Diya Dard Liya is a 1966 Indian Bollywood drama, social film released on 1966. The film is directed by Dilip Kumar.

A kind-hearted, widowed landlord, Thakur, lives a wealthy lifestyle with his son, Ramesh; daughter, Roopa; and an adopted child, Shankar. Ramesh hates Shankar and often abuses him. Years pass by, Thakur has died, and all three children have grown up. Ramesh (Pran) frequents a stunningly attractive Courtesan, drinks alcohol, and continues to abuse and mercilessly beat Shankar (Dilip Kumar), who bears this in silence as he and Roopa (Waheeda Rehman) are in love with each other. When Ramesh finds out that Roopa wants to wed Shankar, he has him severely beaten and thrown off a cliff. Ramesh then arranges Roopa's marriage to another wealthy man, Satish, while he continues to romance Tara and even signs over his entire estate and home to her. A few years later, Shankar returns, having survived being thrown off the cliff, this time as the wealthy Raja of Belapur. He is fully prepared to compromise with Ramesh and propose to Roopa. He finds out that nothing has changed, however. Ramesh, though rendered penniless by Tara, still hates Shankar. Satish is engaged to Roopa and a marriage date has been fixed. Shankar's love is now replaced by vengeance and hate, and all he can think of is destroying the lives of Ramesh, Roopa, Satish and his sister, Mala, and he devises several plans which he intends to put into use to destroy his opponents' lives. He abuses and insults Roopa, attempting to avenge himself upon her for her apparent unfaithfulness by romancing Mala, but love conquers all in the end.

"DIL DIYA DARD LIYA" is the story of two innocent and emotionally tender and throbbing hearts, ignorant of the art of life or living, coming by accident and instinctively developing love and liking for each other. It is the story of their calf love culminating into vows of tured, sincere and eternal love. . It is the story of a tender and simple girls revolt against injustice and brutalities of her step brother, her conflicting and divided loyalty to her vow of eternal love to the person she loved from childhood and her loyalty to the traditional inhititions of the aristocratic Thakore family in which she was born. . It is the story of a young mans untold suffering and consequent determination to make himself eligible to win the girl he loved, his disillusionment in love and vow to avenge the frustration inflicted on him. . It is the story of the catastrophe which overtakes the once aristocratic and properous family of the Thakur and all the characters involved in it because of dissipateion, gambling and licentiousness of its only son and heir. . It is a story that unfolds an intense emotional drama whose highly strung characters are poles apart in their assessment of lifes values objectives and virtues. . Ramesh, a prodigal son of a Thakur, falls into bad company and becomes prey to lower instincts and carnival living. Shanker, an heir to a Kingdom, but unware of his origin, living in the family as a menial servant but nourishing lofty ideals of life, falls in love with Ramesh sister Roopa. Being constantly made conscious of his obviously unknown origin and penury by the unending harsh behaviour of Ramesh Shankar takes a vow not to rest until he has amassed wealth and position in life to deserve Roppas hand. Roopa dipped in Shakers love silently suffers all the illtreatment from her step brother Ramesh. She smarts under the ignominy which local rumour mongers hurl at her. Once Shanker was beaten by Rameshs hirelings mercilessly and thrown into a river. Desolate and lonely Roopa languished in the mistaken belief that Shanker was dead. She was cut to the quick by the infamous accusation hurled by a dancing girl whom Ramesh kept at their ancestral home. Helpless, friendless and physically and mentally crippled Roopa succumbs to the persistent entreaties and persuasions of Satish, a childhood chum and agrees to marry him to save familys honour. . Incident after incident follow and heap once upon the other in quick succession creating tension, uncertainty and suspenses. Conflicting emotions rise with an under current of love, deep romance and deep hatred and criss-cross each other. The characters become victims of circumstances and fate and pass through vicissitudes of life and as we reach the climax dramatic impact of the story heightens. The character appear to be on a precipice where their fate hangs in balance. The end is epitomised in the title " DIL DIYA DARD LIYA".
