Story

Ghare Baire is a 1985 Indian Bengali costume drama, drama, period film released on Jan 14, 1985. The film is directed by Satyajit Ray.

Nikhilesh, a king of a remote village in Bengal is beloved by all his people, both Hindus and Muslims. He is married for 10 years with Bimala. She has a sister -in- law who is a widow. This experience taught Nikhilesh to think about woman's liberation. He educated Bimala in English culture, literature and music and at last he brings her in their outer chamber of the palace by breaking old traditions and introduces her with his friend Sandip. Sandip is a freedom fighter and also a big windbag. Nilhilesh keeps his photograph in his bedroom and when he comes to his village for political purpose Nikhilesh gives him shelter. Nikhilesh has his own opinions about the current political situation in dependent India, but he loves his people also. Sandip wants to stop the sale of the foreign goods in teh local village market. Nikhilesh cant make it because poor villagers depend and live on these cheap goods. Sandip meets with Bimala in the drawing room of the palace, and starts to flirt with her. Its Bimala's first experience with another man, she becomes fascinated by his circumlocution and political charisma. Soon they start to meet regularly and become sexually involved. Nikhilesh comes to know everything; it breaks his heart. Soon, his beloved peoples also start to betray him, Sandip's followers set fire in foreign goods by force, and a riot breaks out. Sandip escapes but at that time Bimala's fascination has vanished, already she realizes Sandip's true character; she tries to come closer to her husband again and Nikilesh forgives her with his own kind nature. He goes into the middle of rioters to bring peace, and is killed by his own people. Bimala returns to her inner chamber as a widow.
