--
The setting of our story is laid in a U.P.town and begins with the happy life of Pandit. Har Prasad, his wife Ganga, their three grown-up sons with their wives and an unmarried daughter Kumud. Har Prsad was more popularly known in the town as Panditji and was held in high esteem by the people. His daughter Kumud was bethrothed to Satish, son of Damdi Lal, a shylock whose sole aim in the life was, as his rame suggested, to a mass money by hook or crook. Also there was a poor but respectable neighbour of Panditji who was called Gopal. . Our story unfolds itself in its various aspects in the above three families which one can find in every town of India. Hence the present story can be called a tale of every household. . The "baraat" (wedding party) that had arrived on the marriage of Gopal sister Kala was returning without the marriage being performed as he could not arrange Rs. 2000/- for dowry to be paid to the grooms father. Mortally ashmed of her brothers helplessness Kala jumped into the well. On receipt of the news Har Prasad (Panditji) went to her aid and saved her from the jaws of death. He also paid the dowry from his own pocket and helped to perform her wedding ceremony. This kind gesture of Panditji earned him encomiums from the townsship and won Gopals heart who since that moment pledged himself to his service. . Once while trying to save Damodi Lal who was set upon by some ruffians Panditji was fatally beaten. . With his death the complexion of the once happy family entirely changed.... Partition of the properly took place.... Quarrels on petty excuses were every day occurances. Since Damodi Lal insisted on having no less than Rs. 5000/- as dowry for his son Satish hand and as the selfish brothers were reluctant to give Rs. 5000/- on their only sister Kumuds marriage they betrothed her to an old man. . Gopal who had devoted himself to the welfare of Panditjis family could not pitr up with this trynny that was being perpetrated on Kumud. He persuaded Satish ti accept her without dowry. On hearing this Damdi Lal, gun in hand rushed to Gopals house where the marriage of his son Satish and Kumud was being solemnised without Damodi Lals consent. He tried to stop the marriage but Satish was equally adamant. Damdi Lal in excitement aimed his gun at Satish. A man who was standing nearby intervened and gave a stick blow to Damdi Lal. In the scuffle, gun went off and missed its aim viz.-Satish but hit Gopal who was standing there. The shocking incident opened Damdi Lals eyes. He returned Panditijis house to his sons and left for Kashi (Benares) bequeathing entire property to satish and Kumud. . Thus Panditjis house once again resounded with laughter and joy. . The present story is not a figment; it is a True Story which one can find in every city, every town, every village of our vast country. It is the story which reflects the glory of our family life. .
