Story

Jewel Thief is a 1967 Indian Bollywood suspense film released on 1967. The film is directed by Vijay Anand, produced by Dev Anand under banner named Navketan.

Vinay (Dev Anand), is an ordinary young man who has to face problems due to his look alike who is a jewel thief named Amar. Vinay along with the help of police pretends to be Amar in order to catch him. But since they are lookalikes, it creates a lot of confusion in the end.

This movie is a thriller with a number of twists and some very melodious songs. Vinay is an ordinary young man who finds himself constantly mistaken for a look-alike jewel thief named Amar. Vinay works with the police to impersonate Amar and crack his crime ring, but it seems that Amar has decided to impersonate Vinay, as well, and soon their true identities are thoroughly muddled.

Hero Vinay (Anand), son of the police commissioner (Hussain), finds himself repeatedly mistaken for notorious jewel theif Amar. He is accused by Shalini (Vyjayanthimala) of being the man who had promised to marry her, and the accusation is substanitated by her brother (Ashok Kumar). Vinay masquerades as Amar to try to crack the gan, even as it appears that Amar too masquerades as Vinay, leaving the audience guessing for most of the film on the identity of the hero, eventually Amar turns out not to be her brother at all. This cult movie, using concealed bars, moving walls and hidden safes, snowlifts and aeroplanes, determined the look and the fashions of much of late 60s Hindi cinema. Vijay Anands direction, demonstrating a greater control over colour than, e.g., Guide (1965), goes well with the taut despite a meandering plot. Song hits include Yeh dil hota bechara (sung by Kishore Kumar), Rulake gaya sapna mera and Hoton pe aisi baat main dabake chali aayi (both by Lata Mangeshkar).
