Story

Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai is a 1960 Indian Bollywood social film released on 1960. The film is directed by Radhu Karmarkar, produced by Raj Kapoor under banner named R. K. Films.

Orphaned lives a poor lifestyle in Central India and makes living singing songs. One day he comes to the assistance of an injured man, and before he knows it, he is abducted and held by a band of bandits, who believe that he is an undercover policeman. The man he assisted is none other than Sardar, the bandit's leader, who treats him like a honored guest, and eventually his daughter, Kammo, and Raju fall in love with each other. Kammo convinces Raju that they are socialists and are just making sure that wealth is equally distributed. Then Raju is asked to accompany the bandits to a wedding feast where he witnesses a child, and the wedded couple getting killed. He figures that he has had enough and goes to the Police, who decide to confront and kill the bandits. Unable to see their deaths, Raju goes to warn the bandits, but is shunned. Than a militant bandit named Raka kills the Sardar, takes over the bandits and decides to forcibly wed Kammo. The question is what can Raju do under these circumstances?

A pacifist film directed by Kapoors cameraman since Awara (1951). Set among the bandit of central India and by the banks of the Ganges, the story tells of Raju (Kapoor), a wandering innocent who believes in the purity of the Ganga and abhors violence (a triat influenced by the philosophies of Acharaya Vinoba Bhave and Gandhi). He rescues a man who turns out to be a bandit chieftain and then reforms the gang after complicated negotiations with the police. In the process, he has to overcome the gangs lietuant, Raka (Pran), and falls in love with the chiefs daughter (Padmini). The film emphaised scenic shots, begining with several slow pans over the Ganges and ending with a spectacular sequence in a valley when the outlaws finally lay down their arms and surrender to the law. Its most typical movement is slow crane movement upwards, leaving the audience to judge the characters and their contradictory ideologies. Kapoor, distinctly order than in hs 50s classics, moves with the stilted gestrue of marionette in his characteristic role of the innocent country lad who ends up reforming the world.
