Love stories are the most tried and tested genre in Bollywood. Youthful stories in particular are eagerly lapped up if the romance quotient is just right, the lead pair is charming, the songs are tuneful and easy on the lips and the sweet and tender moments stay fresh in your memory even after you've made an exit from the cineplex. The process of falling in love changes in film after film, but what remains intact -- at least in Hindi movies -- is the joy and elation

For love or money – that's the age-old problem rearing its head in 'Jo Hum Chahein', an urban romance starring newcomers Sunny Gill and Simran Mundi. On the surface, this film reminds you of the Shah Rukh Khan hit Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, with its theme of a hero conflicted by his ambition into sacrificing his values. Gill plays Rohan, an MBA graduate who has little time for his only family, his dad, because he's too busy climbing up the corporate ladder to success

He's in a hurry to scale the ladder, even if it means a bit of moral wheeling dealing with customers. She is more grounded and doesn't believe in compromising on her principles. Naturally, she finds it hard to forgive and forget a dalliance of his. So far so good. But problems begin when the rest of the film becomes one long string of sequences where Sunny tries to say sorry and Simran retaliates with what's in a sorry! The film literally enters into static zone

‘Jo Hum Chahein’ endeavors to strike a fresh note, but alas, it’s let down by the weight of its trite dialogues. It’s a decent first effort, even though it smacks of sameness.

The age of playing safe, in cinema at least, is officially over. The idea that you take a 'classic' love story, update it for an urban milieu, cast new faces, record a bunch of songs, and spend some money on production design is frankly, dead. Take Jo Hum Chahein for instance. The title is forgettable. The dialogue swings from the offensive "This is Mumbai. Girls will only talk to you if you have a big bank balance" to the torpid, excruciatingly languidly delivered

With a stunning looking debut pair (Sunny Gill and Simran Mundi), and high production values, this one's a pretty film. But that's about it, more or less. Rohan (Gill) is looking at making quick bucks, so soon after his MBA he opts to become a stockbroker, while his idealist dad wants him to join the Armed Forces. Rohan is super confident to the point of cockiness and he is waylaid by a superior (Alyy Khan) and a rich client (Achint Kaur)

To be fair to the film, the male lead Sunny Gill (despite his hopeless Hrithik Roshan hangover) makes a handsome debut. Also he's decent enough in the acting and emoting department. And devoid of a star-studded cast, the film still boasts of high production values. What goes horribly wrong with the film then is that it's backed by an outmoded plotline that is certainly not jo hum chahein. What annoys you is the hero's (Sunny Gill) incessant arrogance and cockiness
