Story

Johny Mera Naam is a 1970 Indian Bollywood action film released on 1970. The film is directed by Vijay Anand, produced by Dev Dutt.

Sohan Kumar, a brave CID officer has a unique way of solving his cases. In one of his cases, he takes the identity of Johny, a thief and gets inside the Jail as a criminal, there he takes Heera (another criminal) into confidence and also woos Rekha (Hema Malini) and finally solves the case.

The film "Johny Mera Naam"is the prototype of the popular gangster action genre, in which siblings separeted at birth or during childhood traverse opposite paths and after a series of circuitous chance events re-unite. Sohan and his brother Mohan (Dev Anand and Pran respectively) are an honest police officer's sons who, as boys, are never able to outdo each other in middle-school boxing matches. Ranjit, the mob leader, retaliating against police action, assassinates their father, disrupting a happy family. Mohan follows his father's killer and stabs him, but accidentally fails into the hands of gangsters, who end up raising him as Moti. He eventually becomes the second-in-command to Rai Saheb Bhupender Singh, the leader of an internatinal smuggling ring.
Sohan, groomed under his father's boss, Mehra, grows up to be a police officer.Posing as a gangster under the pseudonym Johny, Sohan infiltrates the mob when he is hired by Rekha (Hema Malini), the heroine. His mission is to uncover the smugglers' mode of operation. Johny and Rekha travel to Kathmandu, in neighbouring Nepal, where the gangsters transact their business. The plot thickens, and the intrigue and danger heighten when Johny discovers that Rekha is in the game to reach her father, Rai Saheb Bhupender Singh, who operates behind the scenes unseen by the gang members. Rekha and Johnny join forces to win Moti over,
Johnny wins the gangsters' confidence by accomplishing several missions like stealing jewels from a temple, concealing diamonds in Indian musical instruments exported overseas and so on. Moti trusts Johnny until an old partner of the gang, Heera(Jeevan) tips off Moti that Johnny is an undercover cop. Moti and Johnny have a showdown. In this protracted fight scene the brothers recognise each other through their boxing styles. They embrace, come together and round up the rest of the ring with ingenious and entertaining gags. In the long run, it becomes clear that Rekha's father , Rai Saheb Bhupender Singh,, is indeed innocent, a captive of the villainous Ranjit (Premnath) who is Bhupender Singh's evil brother, the real leader of the ring--the man who once killed Mohan and Sohan's father. Ranjit simply uses Bhupender's name to destroy his brother's reputation. Finally the villain is brought to book generating a happy ending.

The policeman father of Mohan and Sohan is killed by villain Ranjit Singh (Premnath) who later abducts Mohan. Mohan grows up to become Moti (Pran) the lieutenant in Ranjit Singhs gang, while brother Sohan (Anand) becomes a cop who tries to infiltrate the gang calling himself Johny. He succeeds with the help of Rekha (Hema Malini), whose father is held hostage by the villain. Eventually the brothers reunite and destroy the gang. Vijay Anand, noted for earlier crime dramas (Jewel Theif, 1967), adopts the dominant Hindi film style (rapid editing and a noisy soundtrack) and several quotes caricaturising the box officer formula, e.g. a quadruple role for the comedian Johar. The script contains attacks on classical music (the gang exploits the foreign craze for Indian music by exporting drugs hidden in musical instruments) and religion (the brglary of a temple with Pran dressed as holy man and Malini as a jogan). Although the film has several Kishore Kumar hit songs such as Pal bhar ke liye koi hame pyar kar le, Vijay Anands famed song-picturising skills are evident only in the opening number, Vaada to nibhaya, sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle.
