Junoon is a 1978 Indian Bollywood costume film released on 1978. The film is directed by Shyam Benegal, produced by Shashi Kapoor.

The film is set during 1857 War of Independence, an Indian Nawab desires to marry a young Anglo-Indian woman, but the girl's mother is opposed of the marriage.

Junoon is an extremely passionate film about love and war. This film is an epic story during the days before independence of India. Javed Khan (Shashi Kapoor) is a great warrior. Sarataz khan (Nasseruddin Shah) hates the Britishers like anything and often kills them in the name of riots. One day kills Ruth's father and is on the way to kill their entire family. Ruth (Nafisa Ali) is a simple english girl. Lala Ramjimal (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) who was a family friend of Ruth's family helps them escape and hides them in his house. Before the riots, Javed Khan, who was already married was deeply in love with Ruth. He decided to bring them all to his house. He did that and after some days, he asked Ruth's hand in marriage from her mother, Mrs. Mariam (Jennifer Kapoor). They did not agree but Javed was very stubborn. Finally in an arguement they decided that if the freedom fighters won Delhi then Ruth could marry Javed. Will Javed be able to win Delhi to win the love of his love?

1857, India is in turmoil. Indian units of the East India Companys Army are in open revolt, leading to a popular uprising against British Rule. . One scorching Sunday morning in May, the regiment in a small British cantonment in the North Indian plains, mutinies and massacres some English men in a church. The attack on the church is led by an ex-sepoy Safraz Khan. Among those killed is Charles Labadoor. His daughter Ruth Labadoor, an anglo-Indian girl, her mother Mariam and her grandmother, Mrs. James, are the only survivors thanks to Ramjimal who rescues them. . Javed Khan, a pathan, brotherinlaw of Sarfaz, had seen Ruth and fallen passionetly in love with her. He will not be at peace until he possesses her. When he comes to know that she is in Ramjimals custody, he kidnaps Ruth and her family while Ramjimal is away. Javeds wife, Firadus, objects to his plans of marriage with Ruth. To her, Ruthand her family are enemies against whom the whole country has arisen. . Sarfaz cannot understand Javeds obession. Instead of joining the fight for freedom, Javed stays home, demanding to marry Ruth. Mariam is adamant. A deal is struck. Ruth will only be allowed to marry if the Indians succeed in breaking the British siege of Delhi. When Delhi is lost to the british, Mariam is elated. Unhappy Javed now hopes that Ruth at least willrespond to his love for her. . Returning from Delhi Sarfraz is even more disgusted with Javed. It is only after Javeds cousin Hafizullah is killed by the British that Javed and his family have to flee. Firadus decides to leave Ruth and mariam behind. They will be safer with the British. . Javed returns from the front to join his family. Firadus is happy that he has returned. Javed, however, leaves the moment he realizes Ruth has been left behind.
