Diwan Saheb, his son Ram and Rams son Rajesh they are the symbols of the past, present and the future - Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. . They differ frome eachh other according to the generation they represent. Diwan Saheb lives in the past. He leads a static life enjoying peace and stability. His grandson Rajesh belongs to jet Age and believes in speed. He studies in London, his eyes set on the fulfilment of his ideals. . While Diwan Saheb is happy contented, and Rajesh is ambitious and hopeful, Ram, who represents the present is leading a listless, dejected life. He was everything money, fame and all that one desires in this worldly material life but there is nobody whom he can call his own. In his palatial house in the big city, the loneliness is maddening and to get over it, he gives lavish parties on one pretext or the other. He celebrates his birthday four times a week ! But these parties instead of mending matters, make the situation worse. Like a dose injected morphia, these parties give him momentary relief but leave him more dejected. . Ultimately, on the advice of his friend, he recalls his son Rajesh from London. When he returns, Rams joy knows no bounds. Ram also wants his father to come. And Rajesh succeeds in inducing his grandfather to come to the city. Ram is happy. He has brought about a union of three generations - the Past, the Present and the Future. . The happiness, however, is short-lived. Hardly two days go by when the grandfather and grandson start quarrelling. It is the inevitable class between the old and the new, between set ideals and new ideas, between what was and what is to be. . Rajesh feels that Diwan Sahebs devotion and pryaer is hyprocisy. Diwan Saheb feels tha Rajeshs dance-parties are depraved and degarding. In this conflict which grows day by day, neither has any thought for Rams feeling. . Ram, who once felt lonely, now worries about the constant bickerings between his father and son. Their clash comes to a head when Diwan Saheb selects a girl of his own choice for Rajesh and invites her father to the city for solemnising the engagement. Rajesh refuses to agree to this match because he had selected his own mate - Monica. who studied with him and whom he loved. He declares that he will marry only Monica and no one else.
