Kalicharan is a taut thriller about a criminal who is used by the police to fight a bigger menace because of his resemblance to one of the most dare-devil police officers, Prabhakar Shrivastava. Somewhat similar to what happened to the simpleton in DON, here the criminal Kalicharan had to be tamed first, and then taught the tricks of the trade. The commissioner, again played excellently by the veteran Prem Nath, plans to put Kalicharan into the police force as Prabhakar Shrivastava, who is actually killed by Lion's men (read LOIN, as pronounced by Ajit, who plays the role to the T). In the process, Kalicharan has to spend tender moments with Prabhakar's two small kids, and also reciprocate to Reena Roy's romantic overtures. How he manages to be part of the family and also bring the bad guys to justice is the story of Kalicharan. Well acted, and well directed, this (and the later Vishwanath) is an example of a crisply edited crime thriller, and showed what Subhash Ghai was capable of if he did not want to be a showman. Shatrughan Sinha must be praised for an over-the-top performance, when the script needed it. Ajit's dialogue saara shahar mujhe LOIN ke naam se jaanta hai was a major influence of later films. Kalyanji Anandji made some hummable tunes that became instant hits, for example, Lata's ja re ja o harjai, and the kids' ek batta do.

The film tries to prove the point that you must seta theif to catch a thief. Kalicharan, a lifeterm convict, who resembles a murdered police officer, is installed in the officers place by an I.G. of police to expose a rich socialite, who indulges in all kinds of anti-social activites. *** Set a Thief to catch a thief is an old adage. Kalicharan, a life- server in Delhi Central Jail, is brought out by inspector General of Police Khanna, and installed as Deputy Superintendent of Police Prabhakar in Bombay. The reason for this ruse is that Kalicharan, a stormy and totally unmanageable convict, closely resembles late DSP Prabhakar, who has been liquidated just as he is about to nab the Countrys most notorious grain hoarder and racketeer, Deen Dayal, the Lion, an he nick-named. Khanna hopes that if the Lion does not know that Prabhakar is dead there is every chance of bringing him to justice. . Kalicharn is set up as DSP Prabhakar and in the bargain gets for himself a lovely girl, Sapna, as his sweet-heart, and the late Prabhakars two motherless kids as his own. They think that he is their real father. Kalicharan picks up the trail where Prabhakar had left it, and through its help and his own native cunning and daring, finally corners the Lion in his own den. But when he discless the identity of the Lion as Seth Deen Dayal, Khannas very close friend, the Police Chief laughs and ridicules the very idea. To prove his discovery and get the inside story and evidence against Deen Dayal. Kalicharan himself joins his gang. In this daring move he has the backing of Sapna, who by now also knows Kalicharans real identity. At this stage of our story, several intriguing questions arise.
