Kanoon 1994

Kanoon is a 1994 Indian Bollywood action film released on Apr 01, 1994. The film is directed by Sushma Shiromani, produced by Chitra Shiromani under banner named Shiromanee Chitra.
Chopras courtroom drama and suspense movie tells of the progressive Judge Badriprasad (A.Kumar) whose daughter Meena (Nanda) is married to the equally progressive Public Prosecutor Kailash Khanna (R.Kumar). Kailash witnesses his father-in-law commit a murder. His dilemma grow when a petty theif is arrested and tried in Badriprasads court. Eventually, when Badriprasad is forced to step down ad submit to a new investigation, the killer is found to be an identical look-alike of the judge. The unlikely ending is shored up by a strong plea against capital punishment. The long court sequences are alleviated by extensive film noir passages (of the crane movements along walls and corridors), and the films association with Hollywood models is enchanced by the absence of songs. *.* All law is based on human evidence and since human beings are what they are, their evidence cannot be infallible . Is it therefore justifiable to take the life of one man on the evidence of another? and if there is a mistake in the dispensation of justice, which also human and for any reason an innocent man gets involvedm the misery and tragedy that come in its wake can be a most depressing spectacle . This is the argument on which the story of "KANOON" is based, and it is told with the help of five characters or may be six, if you count the dead man also. . The family of Sessions Judge Badri Prasad is composed of himself, his sone Vijay and daughter Meena. Kailash also is just like a member of this family- for he is engaged to be married to Meena. He is the Public Prosecutor. . Vijay is a product of modern society-happy go lucky and extravagant. His misadventures land him in the clutches of Dhaniram, a noted money lender. Constant need of funds make him a debtor of Dhaniram and at the start of the story he is threatened by the vicious money lender that if he (Dhaniram) would make use of the blank IOU signed by Vijay and recover all that the Judge possessed in the shape of material wealth. . Unnerved by this threat Vijay rushes to seek the help of his sister, as he lacks the courage to face his father. Meena takes Kailash into confidence over this problem and requests him to help her wayward brother to get out of the tight hole into which he has landed himself on account of his own follies. kailash reaches the home of Dhaniram as the city clock chimes the hour of Eleven at night. Dhaniram is about to retire for the night but he readily welcomes the visitor. . By a clever ruse Kailash is able to wrest the blank IOU of Vijay from the hands of Dhaniram but just as he is about to leave, he sees from the window the approaching figure of Judge Badri Prasad who is coming into the house. He surmises that the Judge also must be coming on the same errand on which he(Kailash) had come. He does not like to face the judge in Dhanirams house at that hour; it could be embarassing to both. He, therefore,hides himself in the adjoining room and allows Dhaniram to receive the Judge. But before his astonished eyes he sees a heinous crime committed. With the flash of a dagger, there is a scream and before he could collect his senses the money lender lies dead in his own blood. The killer does not find any difficulty in getting out of the house, for the door is open and all that he had to do, was to put off the lights with gloved hands. . Dazed and awe struk, Kailash comes near the dead body, when the crash of a milk jug arouses him from his coma and he suddenly realises the danger in which he himself is placed. He also rushes out of the house. . The fallen milk make a bee-line for the dead body and for sometime it appears as if the murder has become a fool proof one. . Into this set up enters another character. This is Kaliya, and a petty thief. Discovering that the window of Dhanirams house is open, he climbs up the drain pipe and lands into the drakned room where the corpse lies. While tiptoeing into the room his feet land on the spilt milk,slip and he lands plump on the dead body. Groping in the dark his hands get smeared with the blood of the dead man and in search of a support he gets a tight grip on the murder weapon-a-dagger! Scared out of his life by the gruesome situation into which he has landed, he forgets all thoughts of thieving and rushes out of the house via the drain pipe by which he had entered. Unfortunately for him he lands into the arms of two policemen on the beat. His blood-stained hands, his footprints in the spilt milk,,and the finger prints on the dagger, as well as his record of prison sentences for petty thievery leave no doubt about his complicity and the poor yokel is hauled up before the Law as the murderer. . He is brought to trial for the murder of Dhaniram in the Court of Sessions Judge Badri Prasad. Kailash, the Public Prosecutor was dumb-founded to see an innocent man being accused of a crime which he had not committed. When he crosses over to the defence to try and save the innocent man he excites the suspicions of his fiancee who knows that Kailash was there at the house of Dhaniram at the time of murder. . And since Kailash is not able to tell her the real truth, the suspicion becomes more pronounced. . This is the back ground and these are the characters we now take you to the Court of Judge Badri Prasad for the trial of Dhanirams murder. . Since the case is Sub-Judice we will not comment on it and will only take you to the Court to watch the proceedings as each one of the characters, turn by turn are indicated for the murder of Dhaniram and the irrefutable evidence that is piled up against each one of them.
