Kathputli is a 1957 Indian Bollywood family drama, social film released on Jan 01, 1957. The film is directed by Amiya Chakraborty, produced by Ajit Chakraborty under banner named Sreerangam Production, music composed by Shankar-Jaikishan.

Pushpa comes from a poor family, and is a good dancer and singer. She would like to assist a puppeteer with his makeshift dolls and puppet act. Unfortunately, he meets with an accident, and is hospitalized. Some of his puppets were also damaged during this accident. Pushpa approaches Loknath for work, and he gets her to work on stage, and would like her to become a movie star. Will Pushpa give up her simple life, and take on the glamorous route?


Chakravartys last film was completed after his death by Bose. It is a melodrama about Pushpa (Vyjayantimala) who loves and marries a small-time puppeteer (Kaul). She becomes a famous dancer in the theatre of the benevolent Loknath (Sahni) amd gets embroiled in the mans tragic life, estranging hr from her husband (Kaul). A Vyjayantimala vehicle, the film consists of expensively staged dance sequences loosely strung together, incl. the hit number Bagad bam baaje damaroo. *.* Are we all puppets in the hands of fate? Have we no free-will? Are we all the victims of circumstances? There are big questions and lets leave them to metaphysicians. We are interested in small things which add up to make life.
