Story

Ladai Ke Baad is a 1943 Indian Bollywood social film released on Jan 01, 1943. The film is directed by Ram Daryani.
In a city lived a rich business magnte Seth Bansilal with his wife Laxmidevi and a very very naughty son Kumar. But there were other two important menberes of the family too-members without whom perhaps this story would never have been written. They were Kisan, the servent of the house; and Meena, a pet cat of Kumar, and also-but to that we will come later. . In the same city, and in the house next to Seth Bansilals, one day arrived Judge Ramnarayan with his wife Sushiladevi and a collegian daughter bearing the same name as did the pet cat of Kumar. Meena, Judge Ramnarayans daughter, had her pet animal too. It was a dog and as luck would have it, was called by the name Kumar. When Meena came to the city she did not know her dog and her maid-servant Radha were destined to paly a very vital role in shaping her future. . When the neighbours-Judge Ramnarayan and his family arrived, Kumar, our hero, who was watching from the gallery, was the first to see them His young herart jumped at the very sight of Meen and when Meena called out "Kumar" he was on the point of jumping down from the gallery, so great was his joy, until of course he discovered that Meena was calling out for her dog and not for him. . Meena also had quite a favourable impression of Kumar but though the masters had thus liked each other, the dog Kumar and the cat Meena obviously didint entertain any soft felings for each other and heace Kumar the hero-felt justified in remarking: . "Ah, hardly have they arrived and war has been declared", and anybody who would have heard the hissing of ferocious Meena-the cat-and the enraged Kumars ear-splitting barking, would have thought the same. . Immediately the newly arrived had settled down and comtemplated establishing a friendship with their neighbours. But Man proposes and God disposes and indeed if it were not so, there would be very little drama in life. Life would be too smmoth to be worth calling "life". . So it hapened, that before Seth Bansilal and Judge Ramnarayan could give a practical shape to their thought, Meena, the cat, and Kumar, the dog, met in the back-yard. They met with glaring eyes and clenched teeth. There was scratching, screaming and shouting, which attrachted the two servants of the two famulies. Kisana and Radha in tyring to save the animals from each others hungry mouths, freely hurled abuses at each other and Radha in trying to save the animal from each other and Radha, true to her species, did not let Kisan go, until she had left a permanent mark on his wrist by her strong womans teeth. The battle was destined to spread itself in and aroung the two houses. A mole was beginning to develop into a mountain. . Kisan and Radha, when questioned by the respective masters as to what the row was about, told white lies in order to save their shins. Kisan even went so far as to tell his Master that Meena-the heroine-had bit him on his wrist and abused Bansilal "as a good for nothing, fat bellied dandy." . This enraged Bansilal so that he swore he would have nothing to do with the neighbours, and when Radha came to his house with an invitataion to tea, he abused the maid-servant and her masters to such an ectent that even Radha couldnt help hurling back a reply:, `You neednt fear my master is after your son for his son-in-law. Meenadevi can have thousands of such young men." . So the battle started gaining in interests and speed. Judge Ramnarayan disgusted by Seth Bansilals attitude washed his hands off the affair. . But Kumarbabu hadnt done so. He kept on trying tricks after tricks to win Meenas attention. They were both in the same class in the college and while listening to the drab lectures, Kumar found ample opportunities and time to make his presence "Felt" by Meena. Meena while pretending to resent his overtures, secretly admired him and thus it was that with all the prejudices of the two families and bitterness, these young hearts caem together. What with the college studies, college gatherings, college sports, Kumar and Meena continued to be drawn closer and closer together till one day Kumar impatiently asked his beloved "will you marry me?" She smiled and gave him a shy nod and he knew he was accpeted. . But this was only half the battle won. The other half, and more difficult one, had yet to be won. They had agreed but what about their parents: One day Seth Bansilals family and also Judge Ramnarayans family met at a party given by a common friend. Kumar thought it was the opportunity to set over the strain and misunderstanding, but as Satan would have it, Judge Ramnarayan asked innocently, "Seth Bansilal you are a locky man. We must be the same age, but hows it you still have such a luxuriant growth of absolutley black hair?" Seth Bansilal with his heart swelling moved his hand lovingly on his scalp with the result that his wig came out. All eyes saw the truth and threr was a roar of laughter. Seth Bansilal got up enraged and the party broke up feeling sad and dejected. . Disappointed by the utter failure of their plan Meena sat in her room with her mother and father, and when her father remarked, "How very unlucky. Kumar would have made such a handsome husband for Meena!" She cried in despair and thus exposed her secret. . Things were not different at Seth Bansilals place. In trying to defend Judge Ramnarayan and his daughter, Kumar too exposed his real feelings for the girl. But when Seth Bansilal knew of this he swore he swoer he would get Kumar married to another girl but Meena. And he immediately wrote to a friend to his, asking the hand of his daughter for his son and also inviting the girl to spend a few days with them so that Kumar may know and like her. . Judge Ramnarayan on discovering his daughters feelings for the neighbours son, dicided to swallow false pride and prejudice and went to Seth Bansilals place asking for his sons hand. Seth Bansilal insulted him and added fuel to fire. This provoked Judge Ramnarayan who took a similar oath. . And thus it was that Kumar and Meena had to get married secretly. But in the while, ignorant of thier marriage, Seth Bansilal and Laxmidevi rejoiced at the arrival of Mala whom they intendet to wed Kumar. Kumar unwittingly but forced by the rules of courtesy had to entrtain Mala now and then, much to the discomfort of Meenadavi. . As though this was not enough, Madhukar, the son of a bosom friend of JUdge Ramnarayan, came to the city to make matters more complicated. Judge Ramnarayan, unware of his daughters secret marriage, encouraged Madhukar to woo his daughter. . As the musunderstanding between Meenadavu and Kumar continued to grow, Kumar the dog, and Meena the cat, also added spice to the affair by now and then upsetting the household. . Kumar could not possible ask Meenadavi to leave her fathers house till he had a job; and when he did get a job there was no Meena to be found. . In disgust he went with his family and Mala to a picture; and lo! there was Meena obviously enjoying herself with Madhukar, completely oblivious of Kumars presence. Kumar saw nothing on the scren. His whole attention was now concentrated on Madukar and Meena when he heard Meen whispering to Madhukar "I worship you..." and Madhukar replying "I also love you" he forgot everthing but that he must kill this man who had the audacity to make love to his own wife. He ran to Madhukar and pulled him out of his seat by his collar among the general hissing and protests form the audience. Check out this page for more updates on Ladai Ke Baad.
