It tries to drive home the point that the bondage of "mother" applies equally to every living being in the world whether it be man or animal. This realisation comes to Vijay, an animal catcher the hardway and the point is driven home by an enraged she elephant, whose off-spring had been separated from her by Vijay- not before Vijay had paid with his mothers life.
